Gospel of John: God the Son John the Baptist John 1:19-42 Part 2

Structure of John 1:19-42 John 1:6-8 NKJV (6) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (7) This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. (8) He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. John 1:19-42 takes place in 3 days Day 1—Not that Light (19-28) Day 2—To bear witness of the Light (29-34) Day 3—All through him might believe (35-42)

John 1:29-34 NKJV (29) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (30) This is He of whom I said, "After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' (31) I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water." (32) And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. (33) I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, "Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

Point of Clarification Matthew 3:16-4:2 ESV (16) And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; (17) and behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." (1) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (2) And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Apparently, Jesus was baptized before the timeline of the gospel of John and Jesus came back again through the area where John was baptizing.

Day 2 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him The day after the Pharisees visited John the Baptist John had told the Pharisees that he was not the Light but that He was among them… John sees Jesus and testifies of Him

John’s testimony (32) And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. (33) I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, "Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

John’s Testimony reveals: Christ—Lamb of God Trinity God’s revelation to man

Lamb of God The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Sacrificial Lamb (takes away the sin) Genesis 22:7-8 ESV (7) And Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father!" And he said, "Here am I, my son." He said, "Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" (8) Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together. Exodus 12:21 ESV (21) Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. Isaiah 53:7 ESV (7) He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 1 Peter 1:19 ESV (19) but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Lamb of God In each case, a lamb is killed It’s a substitutionary act Jesus died in our place where we deserve death His act takes away our sin

Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Takes away the sin of the world Takes away – present tense Sin – singular noun sin of the world – singular noun of one group (world)

Takes away the sin of the world Jesus takes away the sin completely Sin in singular as all acts of sins from past, present, and future rolled into one Jesus takes away the sin perfectly Not one sin is overlooked Jesus takes away the sin presently Takes away—present tense; in believer’s life, Jesus is our Advocate, presently and until death!

Takes away the sin of the world Not talking about universalism (everyone is saved because of Jesus’ death) Matthew 7:13-14 ESV (13) "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Jesus’ death is sufficient for every sin that man has done and for every man However, Jesus’ death is only effective for those who believe

Reason for baptism in water (30) This is He of whom I said, "After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' (31) I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water." John baptized to reveal the Savior of the world…to reveal the ultimate Baptizer Matthew 3:11 ESV (11) "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Did John know Jesus? I did not know Him Two thoughts about this: John did not know Jesus as Messiah until he saw the Holy Spirit upon Jesus (knew Jesus relationally) John did not know Jesus relationally (never had interacted with Him) Either way—what it tells us is that John did not go to Jesus and planned this to deceive people

God’s revelation to John but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, "Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” God gave John a sign to identify who the Messiah would be

Some further thoughts I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. Did the Holy Spirit become a dove? Did Jesus not have the Holy Spirit before He was baptized?

Testify And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God John recognized who Jesus was and His purpose on earth His testimony led some of his disciples to believe in Jesus
