The First Commandment Lesson 10

The First Commandment Love for God

What God Requires of Us 1. That we fear (respect, honor) Him above all things. (Put Him first and honor what He says.) Why? 1.He is the only real God. 2.We belong to Him. 3.Therefore we will hate what He hates and love what He loves.

What Does God Require of Us 2. That we love Him above all things (treasure Him and devote ourselves to His will). Why? 1.He is our greatest treasure. 2.He loved us first. 3.Therefore we love Him in return.

What Does God Require of Us 3. That we trust Him above all things (rely on His Word and promises for all blessings.) Why? 1.He can always be counted on to keep His Word. 2.He always gives everything we need, especially Himself.

What God’s People Do Not Want To Do God’s people do no want to fear, love, or trust in anyone or anything more than the Triune God, either openly or secretly. Idolatry = having other gods

When do people fear, love, or trust in other things…. Fearing – friends, classmates, enemies, superstitions. Loving – parents, friends, self, money, popularity, pleasure Trusting – one’s own work, superstition, false gods, luck, other people.

What our study of this commandment leads us to do 1.To confess that we have not kept it perfectly. 2.To rely on Jesus who has kept it perfectly in our place. 3.As God’s justified people; to love and obey his commandment in the future.
