Presentation Objectives 1. Review changes in the new Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for mathematics 2. Look at changes in the accelerated math program for middle schools 3. Review the implementation timeline for the new GPS for mathematics

Presentation Objectives 4. Look at 5th to 6th grade placement guidelines 5. Review our support plan for GPS 6. Answer questions

Changes Resulting from the New GPS for Middle Grades Math Fewer standards Depth versus breadth Vertical ladder versus spiral Integrated content Greater infusion of algebra and geometry Balance among computation, concepts, and problem solving Alignment with NCTM Greater emphasis on understanding Requires higher level thinking Not bound to a textbook Vertical accountability required

Integrated Math Development of the algebra strand begins in grade 3 and continues through grade 8. Scope and Sequence Development of the geometry strand begins in grade K and continues through 8. Balance among Numbers and Operations, Measurement, Algebra, Geometry, and Data/Analysis/Probability occurs at virtually all grade levels.

Placement Guidelines for Grades Five to Six The following placement guidelines reflect input from Directors, representative Middle School Principals, representative Elementary School Principals, Coordinators, Teachers, Counselors, and Advisory Committee Members.

Placement Guidelines for Grades Five to Six I. Placement decisions made by middle school teachers and administrators II. Placement into the accelerated courses to be made no later than the end of the first nine weeks III. Fewer students will be placed in the accelerated courses in the middle schools IV. Placement will be based on CRCT, ITBS, and Performance Series test scores

Placement Guidelines for Grades Five to Six, cont. V. Specific test-score guidelines were issued to schools April 1, 2005 VI. Students who do not meet test-score guidelines will not be allowed to waive in VII. A ‘second chance’ pre-test will be given the first week of school to all on- level sixth grade students VIII. Accelerated math opportunities will be available in high school for on-level students

Document I Introduction Sixth Grade Math Curriculum Concepts and Skills to Maintain Performance Standard(M6N) Content Standard(M6N1) Elements(a, b, c,...) Remark Terms and Symbols Strand(M6N)

Additional Components of GPS Tasks for Grade 6 Standards Recommended Tasks, Sample Work / Teacher Comments Sample Student Work Sample Teacher Comment
