Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge: ‘ In March 2012 set a challenge to deliver major improvements in dementia care and research by 2015’. Range of work going on in order to meet this challenge. Dementia friendly communities (including schools).

Co-operative learning trust Self-responsibility, social responsibility and caring for others. Importance of wider community. Vision to build a culture within which every pupil finds a way to contribute to the wider community.

How did we get involved? Exemplary Health and Social Care Department. Range of qualifications. A level Health and Social Care complete a unit ‘Care Practice and Provision’. Rock Sturt (BME service development officer) suggested that NSfG should apply to become one of the pioneer group schools for the Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge. Students were instrumental in our bid to become one of the pioneer schools.

Dementia forest – provided a way of starting the conversation in our school about dementia. Every member of our school community was invited to anonymously complete a label. The project so far………..

My Mum had dementia and couldn’t remember me and just hugged me and said I was a lovely girl. My Dad had dementia and used to comment that my Mum was a good woman and always helped him but he didn’t know who she was until a week before he died when he referred to her as ‘my lovely wife’.
