3. Informal Letters- A suggested layout
Although this is an informal letter, there are still conventions that need to be observed, even though the ‘rules’ are not as strict..

Your can use any salutation depending on how well you know the person.
Dear Jack, or Hiya Jack, or Wotcha Cuz
 If the person you are writing to is a relative, it is polite to enquire about the family first.
How are you and how’s Aunty Jean? I was sorry to hear that she’s not been very well. Hope she’s feeling better soon. Mum sends her love to her ‘twiny’ as well.

4. Informal Letters- A suggested layout
You should the begin to address the point of the letter. Again, because it is an informal letter you can use non-standard words and terms. However, if this is an exam question, remember the examiner has to be able to understand what you mean.
I’m writing to find out if you had been able to decide yet if you and you mum are able to come to Mum’s surprise 50th Birthday party. I’m writing so you can keep this as a surprise for you mum too as it’s her birthday as well

5. Informal Letter Writing Task
You are considering going to a University in the USA or the UK and have a cousin who is studying at a university in that country that you wish to attend.
Write a letter to your cousin which asks their advice about studying in the USA or UK. In your letter enquire about:
How they are getting on.
What you have heard about the University/why you want to go there.
The quality of teaching at the university.
Accommodation & living costs
University sports and social facilities.
What life is like living in that country.
Anything else you feel may be of use.
Remember to set your letter out correctly and sign off at the end.
