5 Definite articles El or la “El” is masculine and “La” is feminine Exceptions Words that end in: – Dad (f) (la felicidad = the happiness) – Ion (f) ( la conversacion= the conversation) – Tad (f) (la libertad= the freedom) – Tud (f) ( la juventud= the youth) – Umbre (f) ( la cumbre = summit) – Words that start and end with an “a” are masculine, HOWEVER….their plural form are feminine ‘’ el agua  Las aguas” – Words that end with “ista” are both feminine and masculine. – Words that end with “ ma”, “pa”, “ta” are masculine, that are non- concrete are masculine ( el clima –weather, el drama, el idioma = the language)
