1. Periodic Table The Periodic Table is a list of all the elements known to man. Elements are listed by their symbols, for example Gold: Au and Lithium: Li. A horizontal row in the periodic table is called a PERIOD. A vertical column in the periodic table is called a GROUP.

2. Compounds A compound is two or more elements chemically joined together. Example When magnesium is burned a chemical reaction takes place between magnesium and oxygen and a compound called magnesium oxide is formed.

3. Naming Compounds The name of the compound tells us the elements in it. The compounds with the name ending in “ide” contain the two elements indicated e.g. sodium chloride contains sodium and chlorine. potassium iodide contains potassium and iodine.

4. The compound with the name ending in “ate” or “ite” then the compound also contains the two elements in the name and oxygen. e.g. copper sulphate contains copper, sulphur and oxygen iron nitrite contains iron, nitrogen and oxygen.
