WHAT IS THE GIMSPP? Training program for 1 st and 2 nd year Texas medical students Students observe and assist a general internist in a community-based practice for up to 4-weeks during their summer break

TEXAS HIGHER EDUCATION COORDINATING BOARD Increase student interest in internal medicine Demonstrate the need for primary care clinicians in internal medicine Increase interest in rural and underserved areas of Texas GOALS OF THE GIMSPP

APPLICATION DEADLINE The FINAL application deadline For the Summer GIMSPP Program is MARCH 3, 2008 NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED!

IMPORTANT! Please DO NOT contact ANY of the preceptors already enrolled in our program If you are interested in signing up a new physician as your preceptor, we encourage you to do so. Stipends will still be issued

STIPENDS You receive a stipend to offset meal, housing, and transportation costs $1000 for a 4-week program in a rural/underserved area $750 for a 4-week program in an urban/metro area Stipends for 3-week programs are pro-rated Area 3-week Metropolitan $562.50 Rural $750.00

TIPS! Turn in your application early! Placements are made on a first come – first serve basis Choose a different city for your 2 nd and 3 rd location preference Find your own preceptor in internal medicine – it’s the only way to guarantee the match of your choice

Other programs We cross check lists; let us know if you’re applying to more than one program We flag the files of all students who apply to more than one

PRECEPTOR ROLE AND QUALIFICATIONS Practice at least 50% general internal medicine Possess a current Texas medical license with no restrictions Practice in a community based clinic/hospital outside of the medical school Participate in the program on a volunteer basis

PRECEPTOR TRAINING All preceptors receive faculty development materials which include: Training video Interactive CD-ROM Preceptor Manual Training Tips

LIABILITY INSURANCE Students participating in the program are covered under the liability insurance of the medical school where they are enrolled A letter verifying coverage will be provided upon request to any participating physician
