Review of Class One: Purposeful Questions

Proverb 20:5 “The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” Become a “man of understanding.” Ask directly about studying the Bible. Before studying any topic, first ask your friend his view of the topic. Explain the aim(twofold) of the study and then achieve that aim for your friend. Don’t preach! Ask educing questions. Apply the Purposeful Question Wedge to disciple the heart and not just the head. Review of Purposeful Questions

Review Greatly Applicable Scriptures Applying the Scriptures from Seeking God and Word studies Introduce the Purposeful Question Worksheet Class 2 Agenda

Greatly Applicable Scriptures (GAS)

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; Apply your heart to what I teach, For it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart And have them ready on your lips.” Proverbs 22:17-18

contentLearn the content of each scripture so you can call upon it at the necessary times to meet real needs. Learn the location of the scripture so that you can find it (i.e. Book and Chapter). Example: This seeker is struggling with the belief that concealing sin will actually serve him better than confessing will. There’s a scripture on that topic in Proverbs… chapter 28…. Here it is, verse 13! Real World Memorization

Review two studies each week to reinforce the memory work you’ve already invested Use them or lose them; study with your friends; join in studies with other’s friends Challenge yourself on the monthly IDEs (the middle or 15 th of each month) to write out all the scriptures (“I Deny Entropy!”) Always Maintain Your “Base” of Guard the Gospel Scriptures

Designate a few pages at the end of your journal for topics that seem relevant; for example: Individualism, Selfishness, Apathy/Seeking God, Fear God, Holiness, Purposeful Life, Boldness, Worship, Fellowship, Grace, etc. “Drop in” Scriptures as you encounter them during your normal daily QTs. Share these treasures with brothers and sisters and seekers. 26 Seeking God Study

Think of this study as “counting the costs” to truly embark upon this journey to pursue God Consider using one or two of these scriptures (Matthew 7:7, Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 6:33, Acts 8:26-40, Acts 17:11-12, Matthew 13:44-46) and incorporate it into another study like Word or Discipleship Seeking God can also be a hard-line study to restart someone who has become tentative in their studies Think of this study as “counting the costs” to truly embark upon this journey to pursue God Consider using one or two of these scriptures (Matthew 7:7, Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 6:33, Acts 8:26-40, Acts 17:11-12, Matthew 13:44-46) and incorporate it into another study like Word or Discipleship Seeking God can also be a hard-line study to restart someone who has become tentative in their studies Seeking God Study in GTG

Word Study

Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Thus, the aim of studying the Word of God is to help a seeker build faith in Jesus. One must accept the bible as the one true standard (vs. feelings, experiences, peers’ opinions, or family traditions) by which to live life if one is to know true salvation from Jesus. 37 The Koran, the Book of Mormon, and parts of the (Hindu) Veda claim divine inspiration, but none of these books contains predictive prophecy. Some of the Bible’s claims: –The time (Dan. 9), city (Mic. 5:2), and nature (Isa. 7:14) of Christ’s birth were foretold in OT –Christ’s life, death and resurrection (Isa. 53) –Destruction of Edom (Obad 1) –The curse of Babylon (Isa. 13) –The destruction of Tyre (Ezek. 26) and Ninevah (Nah 1-3) –The return of Israel to the land (Isa 11:11) The Koran, the Book of Mormon, and parts of the (Hindu) Veda claim divine inspiration, but none of these books contains predictive prophecy. 38 The Bible deals frankly with the sins of its characters, even when those sins reflect badly on God’s chosen people, leaders, the biblical writers themselves: – Patriarchs in Gen. 12:11-13; 49:5-7 –King David in 2 Sam. 11-12 –Gospel evangelists own faults and those of the apostles in Matt. 8:10-26; 26:31-56; Mark 6:52; 8:18; Luke 8:24-25; 9:40-45; John 10:6; 16:32 –The disorder of the church in 1 Cor. 1:11; 15:12: 2 Cor 2:4 The Bible deals frankly with the sins of its characters, even when those sins reflect badly on God’s chosen people, leaders, the biblical writers themselves: – Patriarchs in Gen. 1:11; 15:12: 2 Cor 2:4 The Bible is Unique

The Dead Sea Scrolls’ discovery of 1947 show excellent textual transmission of the Old Testament. They date from 200 BC to 100 AD and include all OT books (except Esther). Before their discovery, the earliest Hebrew manuscripts dated from the 10 th century AD! 41 The New Testament is so well attested by the “Patristics” that we could lose all these early manuscripts and still reconstruct a complete early bible from all their quotations (over 36,000 quotations)! The Bible is Accurate

The Bottom Line for the Word You can pile up evidence upon evidence for the inspiration of God’s Word; however… “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it of God or whether I speak from Myself.” (John 7:17)

What has frustrated your past efforts to seek God? initial study Matthew 7:7 and 7:13-14 What’s the promise in v.7? How many will FIND God? How many will really SEEK Him? Will you? How? Why? What will “try” look like (for example in prayers, study, etc)? Why are the ones who “try” so surprised at the end result? Have you ever “made every effort” to achieve something? Apply that!
