3 Snakes need energy from food to survive. They eat rats, rabbits, and eggs. 2

7 Some snakes have as many as 1,000 bones. A snake is a reptile with stretchy skin between its scales. 6

8 Snakes can have more than two hundred sharp teeth called fangs. Snakes molt. 7

9 Snakes use scutes to move. A sidewinder moves forward by tossing its body sideways. 8

10 Some snakes jump of branches and flatten their bodies so they’ll fall safely. 9

11 S idewinders sling their bodies sideways to move on the desert floor, N ot blinking when a distraction happens. A nacondas squeeze their enemies until they stop breathing. K een sense of smell from their tongue to help them track food. E ggs are not protected by all snakes. 10

12 Molt-A snake hits its nose against a rock then slithers out of its old skin. Reptile-An animal that has dry scales and tough skin. The environment alters a reptile’s temperature. Scutes-Snakes have large scales on their belly that help them move. 11
