Green Buildings Mesut Altuntaş Furkan Turan

2 What is green building? Green building is the practice of utilizing environmentally responsible methods and optimizing efficient use of resources in order to realize economic, energy & water-usage efficiencies while maintaining healthy land, water and air quality throughout the life-cycle of a building.

3 Why is important? For the environment Implementing green practices into your home or office can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve both air and water quality, and protect ecosystems and biodiversity. For the savings Green systems and materials reduce energy consumption, which in turn reduce your energy bills. For your health Sustainable design and technology enhance a resident's overall quality of life by improving air and water quality and reducing noise pollution

4 How can be reached? Life cycle assessment (LCA)
Siting and structure design efficiency Energy efficiency Water efficiency Materials efficiency Indoor environmental quality enhancement Operations and maintenance optimization Waste reduction

5 Here are 12 ideas: Green Roof Solar Active & Passive Architecture
Insulated Wall/Sidings Low Emissive Windows Furnace /Boiler Efficiency Programmable Thermostat Door Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems Higher Efficiency Shower Heads Water Filters Plumbing Lightning

6 Green Roof Plant filled flat rooftops limit water run-off and provide greater insulation that saves energy Benefits of having a green roof can save a business owner between 20% and 70% of cooling energy in the summer

7 Solar Active & Passive Architecture
Solar for Electricity Converting sunlight into electricity can dramatically cut energy costs. Solar Hot Water Channeling water from rooftop panels to an existing tank limits the energy used to heat water Water heaters last for many years, so choosing an energy efficient water heater with lower running costs could actually save you money over its lifetime.

8 Insulated Wall/Sidings
Insulation is any material that reduces the amount of heat transfer to or from your home through doors, windows, walls, ceilings, floors and gaps. Insulating home will help to: keep the warmth inside your home in winter prevent heat from entering your home in summer reduce your need for heating and cooling appliances reduce your heating and cooling related costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

9 Insulated Wall/Sidings
Interior: rooms heat up quickly Thinner insulating material simple and cost-effective implementation Improved sound proofing Exterior best thermal insulation effect water-repellent without hydrophobing thinner insulation material, higher insulation coefficient

10 Low Emissive Windows These coatings reflect radiant infrared energy, thus tending to keep radiant heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated, while letting visible light pass. To improve thermal efficiency (insulation properties) thin film coatings are applied.

11 More on Windows Curtains and blinds together with pelmets will help to keep heat inside the home. They prevent warm air from coming in contact with the cold glass.

12 More on Windows The home should be orientated and located on a block to maximize the amount of sunlight it receives.

13 Furnace/Boiler Efficiency
Furnace efficiency measures the amount of heat produced compared to the amount of fuel burnt. Furnace efficiency is one of the most important factors to consider when trying to reduce heating costs

14 Programmable Thermostat
Thermostat which is designed to adjust the temperature according to a series of programmed settings that take effect at different times of the day. Simply program the thermostat to warm (or cool) your home when you’re actually there; when you’re away (or asleep), the thermostat switches off.

15 Door Doors are the passegeway to our homes and serve as barriers to the outside environment. Doors should provide a family with security, durability, energy-efficiency, as well as noise abatement.

16 Door Plastic doors are extremely durable.
The growing use of plastic door products has validated their strength, energy-efficiency and acoustic value. Entry doors with a foam plastic core can inhibit sound and add insulation value that can help lower heating and cooling energy needs.

17 Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems
The main purposes of HVAC system are to help maintain good indoor air quality through adequate ventilation with filtration and provide thermal comfort.

18 Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems
Better at controlling humidity and condensed moisture drainage. Space for higher efficiency air filters, and more surface area. Carbond dioxide sensors are used to control the rate dynamically, based on the emissions of actual building occupants.

19 Higher Efficiency Shower Heads
By getting a new efficient shower head, people have a great oppurnity to save water and energy. Design of the shower head controls the shape of the water as well as the speed. Low-flow shower heads can significantly reduce your household water consumption without a noticeable difference to your shower experience.

20 Higher Efficiency Shower Heads
Ordinary shower head uses about 3.5 gallons of water per minute. A newer high efficiency shower head uses only 1.5 gallons per minute. Over one year, that saves almost 11,000 gallons water which adds up to $100 per year in energy savings. High efficiency shower head can also help decrease energy cost by reducing amount of water that is heated for use in the shower. A high-efficiency shower head costs about $65, so you make your money back in less than eight months.

21 Water Filters A water filter removes impurities from water by means of a fine physical barrier, a chemical process or a biological process. Water filters remove common contaminants in city water supplies, ranging from the minor (taste and odor problems) to the serious (cancer-causing pesticides and pharmaceuticals that can contribute to bacterial resistance).

22 Water Filters Water purification is the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce drinking water that is pure enough for human consumption  Many think that bottled water is healthier but it is not true. The soft plastic used to bottle water quickly releases chemicals into the water.

23 Plumbing Plumbing innovations will save you time and materials, and save the owner water and energy. Plastic pipe, if installed properly, shouldn’t leak and should last a long time. two most attractive features of PVC [pipe] are low cost and ease of installation.

24 Plumbing Heating water more efficiently, and preventing that heat from being lost. Water heating can account for up to 15% of commercial building fuel use, or $300 per year for a single–family home.

25 Lighting Install high-efficiency lighting systems with advanced lighting controls. Include motion sensors tied to dimmable lighting controls. Task lighting reduces general overhead light levels.

26 Lighting Careful architectural design is required to maximize natural light in a building while maintaining indoor temperature regulation and reducing direct light glare. Energy efficient light bulbs use significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs, and also last longer

27 Lighting Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL)
CFLs give off the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, but they are up to 80% cooler, are 4 times more energy, last 10 times longer, and are responsible for the emission of 70% less carbon dioxide.

28 Lighting Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
LEDs are extremely energy efficient, lasting over 100 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and up to 10 times longer than CFLs. They have low heat generation, low power requirements, and are highly durable because there is no filament or tube to break.

29 Benefits Environmental benefits Economic benefits Social benefits
Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems Improve air and water quality Reduce waste streams Conserve and restore natural resources Economic benefits Reduce operating costs Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services Improve occupant productivity Optimize life-cycle economic performance Social benefits Enhance occupant comfort and health Heighten aesthetic qualities Minimize strain on local infrastructure Improve overall quality of life

30 Conclusion It requires some effort to make a green house, and it requires more to sustain it. In return, it resullts in fewer consumption, reduce energy, and save the earth. Opportunities in Turkey.
