English expansion in the world: myth or reality? Though there are almost three thousand languages in the world, English is the most universal. It is the official language in over forty countries. It is the most used language in international business, science and medicine. 400 million people speak English as a mother tongue (700 million speak Chinese, 200 million speak Russian and 100 million speak German).

English expansion in the world: myth or reality? Even in the countries where English is not the first language, a number of English words are used. Words from no other language are borrowed more often from English. Hundreds of words borrowed from English can now be found in other languages such as soda, hotel, golf, tennis, jeans, airport.

Purpose and tasks. Our purpose is to find the prints of English in our region. To clear up where and how people use English in our region. To clear up where and how people use English in our region. To find the fields of using English. To find the fields of using English. To analyze the problem and to give the recommendations to local authorities. To analyze the problem and to give the recommendations to local authorities.

Hypothesis: If the world is a “global village”, soon we’ll speak one language. English is everywhere. It is on signs, clothing, soft drinks and other goods around the world. In spite of the popularity of the English words and phrases, they are not always welcome. Some people think that the use of English words is dangerous for the purity of their native language. Some countries tried to eliminate English as their official language in order to save their native tongue. English is everywhere. 6 Course of the research. We have read many books about using English in the world. We have read many books about using English in the world. We have analysed the situation. We have analysed the situation. We have found where English is used. We have found where English is used. We have made a conclusion. We have made a conclusion.

Official opinion. ` A linguist, Bruce Connell, thinks that many languages are disappearing. In Ireland, for example, there are only a few areas where people speak Gaelic, the native Irish language. But there many countries which borrow English words, Russia for example.

English in mass media. We’ve read some newspapers “Tambovskaya Zhisn” for March,2006. We have the next results. There are three main categories of using English in newspapers: 1. 1. There are English words which are known to everybody. We don’t’ think that they are from the English language (football, golf, tennis, volleyball, business, airport, sportsman). 2. 2. There are words which have synonyms in Russian language. We can use Russian words instead English words (monitoring, presentation, test, businessman). 3. 3. The third group of the words are written in newspapers in English. Some people don’t understand the meaning of these words (non stop, top hit, high-tech, e-mail, CD).

English in mass media. We received the next results: English is used more in articles about politics; music; sports news; science and technology.

Analysis. We compared some newspapers “Tambovskaya zhisn” for March 2006 and March 1979. We have counted the English words in them: There are 532 words in 2006. There are 137 words in 1979. We use more English now because it is popular. We shouldn’t forget our language, we shouldn’t use English instead of Russian, especially in mass media.

Survey. We asked 100 people in Bondary what they think about English words in our newspapers.

Conclusion. Most people (58) are against English in our press, (24 are for the using English, they are at the age of 16-25), (18 don’t have an opinion). Russian language is very rich and beautiful. We don’t need English to express our ideas. If people have very strong feelings about the importance of their native language, we probably will not have English as a universal language in the near future. It is certain, however, that English words will continue to pop up everywhere, whether some people like it or not.
