2 Expert 21 Vocabulary “How to Survive, Thrive, and Prepare for What’s Next”

3 course (noun) Meaning: a class or series of classes in a subject Example: The science course I took made me want to become a marine biologist. In middle school, you must take at least one PE course and one music course.

4 extracurricular (adjective) Meaning: connected with a school, but not an academic class Example: Extracurricular activities for high school include sports, drama, and student government. The PM Academy is an extracurricular activity offered at Eisenhower Middle School.

5 efficiently (adverb) Meaning: in a way that gets the best results with the least waste of time or effort Example: I cleaned my room quickly and efficiently so I could make it to the movie theater on time. If you work efficiently on a task you will have time to do the things you enjoy as well.

6 pursue (verb) Meaning: to try to accomplish or obtain, to follow Example: Isaias wants to pursue a career in criminal justice. Compassion, concern for others, is a noble virtue for young people to pursue.

7 requirement (noun) Meaning: something you need to do or to have Example: Janae took a yoga class to fulfil her school’s extracurricular course requirement. A sports physical is a basic requirement for playing basketball or football at Eisenhower.

8 strategy (noun) Meaning: plan of action Example: A good strategy for success in school is to make a study schedule and stick to it. A game strategy is important when playing a difficult opponent or a video game.

9 memorize (verb) Meaning: to learn by heart, to commit to memory Example: Alex had to memorize all the algebra formulas in one night, and boy, was that hard work! If you only memorize facts for a test, you probably won’t remember them later on.

10 varsity (adjective) Meaning: the main team that represents a school in a sport Example: Aliyah tried out for the varsity tennis team because all her friends from school were on it. Ryan will earn his varsity letter in football if he keeps a first string position for the entire season.
