6. Stretch and Challenge Stretch and Challenge is a new QCA initiative for A Levels: Included in A2 assessment Reflected in the style of question asked which invite a greater variety of thinking Questions are structured to show more connections between different sections of the specification Extended writing is encouraged in all subjects A wider range of question types – like case studies and open ended questions More synoptic assessments – exploring connections between different areas and levels of a subject

7. More information on grade A* ‘The introduction of Stretch and Challenge questions will support the awarding of a new A* grade at A Level ‘ – question will not be in a separate paper but included in both papers at A2. The A* grade will be achieved by candidates who have a grade A (at least 80% of the uniform marks for the whole A Level) and who also have 90% of the uniform marks of the A2 units added together. The introduction of Stretch and Challenge will not impact on the other grade boundaries, as it only affects the part of the question above grade A.
