3 IPE Initiatives for IPPE P1 & P3 Students- My First Patient Program (MFP) P2 Students- Service- learning (SL) projects P3 Students- Acute care activities

4 My First Patient Program

5 Inter-professional MFP Program School of Pharmacy (SOP) initiated in 2008 – P1 students screened by P3 students – Ambulatory care IPPE Schools of Dentistry (SOD) and Medicine (SOM) incorporated in 2013 – Benedum Grant – Dental students- 4 th year – Medical students- 2 nd year

6 Inter-professional MFP Program Objectives – Provide skill development and patient care experience to the upper level dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy students. – Provide health and behavioral self-awareness to the first year students. – Increase inter-professional student interaction and respect for the different members of the health care

7 Inter-professional MFP Program Results – Participants 262 total first year students screened – 60 dental, 118 medicine, 84 pharmacy 121 upper-level student providers – 54 dental, 24 medicine, 43 pharmacy – Approximate results of the entering class 65% had some level of dental abnormalities 33% were overweight/obese according to BMI 48% pre-hypertensive or hypertensive 3% current smokers

8 Inter-professional MFP Program Future Plans – Improve existing inter-professional education opportunities and add additional experiences as needed. – Expand the MFP program to include the expertise of other allied health professionals (Nursing, Public Health, Exercise Physiology, etc.) – Analyze the trends of health results and behaviors over time.

9 Inter-professional Service Learning

10 Inter-professional Service- Learning SOP initiated in 2006 – P2 students complete a year-long service learning project – Fall semester- project planning – Spring semester- project implementation Inter-professional component initiated in 2010 – Course requirement 2011-12 academic year

11 Inter-professional Service- Learning Objectives – Collaborate with other professionals to achieve public health outcomes Results – Collaborated with 9 different disciplines for 18 project implementations in 2012-13 Nursing (8), Dentistry (6), Medicine (4), Education (2), Physical Education (1), Dietetics (1), Exercise Physiology (1), Physical Therapy (1) Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive Community service hours earned

12 Inter-professional Service-Learning Future Plans – Assign graded reflection with IPE topic – Log community service hours earned by other disciplines – Include IPE component as part of end-of-semester course evaluation

13 Inter-professional Acute Care IPPE

14 SOP initiated in 2012 with Medicine (MS3) and Nursing (RN Seniors) – IPE subgroup at the Health Sciences Center Mock rounds in the WVU Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) Center – Standardized patient – High-fidelity mannequin

15 Inter-professional Acute Care IPPE Objectives – Focus on teamwork and communication skills Results

16 Inter-professional Acute Care IPPE Future Plans – Activity is being rolled out of regional campuses so that all MS3 students can participate in the rounding experience Will become required experience for all MS3 students P4 students will serve pharmacist role on regional campus Rotating patient cases to avoid repetition
