Where I'm From I am from the colored pitchers in the window, from Cheerios and Craftsman tools. I am from the clearing in the woods--hidden and safe. I am from the wild geraniums and Dutchman's britches, the daffodils transplanted from the Wallace farm. I am from quiet times and Sunday dinners, from both wild and reserved-- from Mary and Faith and Grace. I am from the hermits and storytellers. From special peanuts and no singing at the dinner table. I am from gingerbread houses and neighborhood Easter egg hunts-- agnostic celebrations of Christian holidays. I am from the Wisconsin and northern Europe, rugula and Yorkshire pudding. From scrabble tiles placed in various places, spelling things like "perspective" and "read" and “dream”; the screech of the tablesaw and startling air compressor--hearing blues only in short intervals; from the mobile dancing above the woodstove and living room foot "bicycle" turned violent among sisters. I am from the unorganized wooden box of photos and the generations of books on the shelves, giving me words and images that both comfort and inspire. Where I’m From
