Sensory Integration Gigantic Freeway System How do your senses fit together within your body? How does the brain get all the traffic to the right places? Great Photo What happens if the roads get clogged? 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 1

Five Basic Senses Sight, Sound, Taste, Smell, Touch (MindMap by IQMatrix.com) IQMatrix.com But, did you know there are three more?  Vestibular (balance) Vestibular  Proprioceptive (body position) Proprioceptive  Tactile (different from Touch) Tactile BalanceBalance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBody Position TactileWhy?Interventions 2

Vestibular (Balance) Balance and movement are all parts of the vestibular sense. Healthy vestibular sensory integrations are required for:  Chefs Chefs  Athletes Athletes  Race car drivers Race car drivers  Computer programmers Computer programmers “Proper inner ear function is responsible for a good vestibular sense.”  True? True?  False? False 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 3

Proprioceptive (Body Position) What is my body position? Where is my body? Who has good proprioceptive sensing:  Acrobat? Acrobat  Dancer? Dancer  Gymnast? Gymnast  Michael Jordan? Michael Jordan 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalance Body PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 4

Tactile What is touching me, surrounding me? Which would you like to be covered by:  Mud? Mud  Shaving cream? Shaving cream  Warm sunshine? Warm sunshine  Sand? Sand 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 5

Vestibular (Balance) Great! You got them right! Back to what you were doing: stand on one foot, close an eye, and keep your balance. Are you doing it? Wouldn’t you like to stop? Feeling comfy? What if it weren’t possible to “stop”? What if it just kept on going, and you always felt off balance? OK, stop. Did you like that feeling? 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 6

Proprioceptive (Body Position) Yeah! You got them right. It was a trick question. Now, stand up, close both eyes, walk around where you are until you feel dislocated, lost. Don’t exactly know where you are, do you? Now you are feeling some sensory integration difficulties. Open your eyes. Feel better? But, what if that feeling didn’t go away? 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 7

Tactile That was another trick question. You know you were set up, right?  What is something that you hate?  Now pretend you are in a big lake full of that stuff. Doing the back stroke.  How does it feel? Do you like this?  This is tactile sensing: “What is surrounding me and do I like that?” 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? 10 So, how does Sensory Integration get messed up? Two experts will help us understand:  Dr. Kendal Stewart, NeuroSensoryCenters.com Viruses (takes 30 minutes) Viruses  Salman Khan, KhanAcademy.org Viruses (takes 17 minutes)Viruses Go to these two links above. Click “play”. Learn. Then, please, come back to this page. Want more about Kendal Stewart and Salman Khan?Kendal Stewart Salman Khan 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? 11 Why do things go wacky? Inflammation can occur because the immune system can’t handle all the pathogen load (kill off the bad guys). Inflammation in the brain is a very bad thing; it can shut down the body’s production of human growth hormone. The body stops growing. The brain starts going backward. Is this not terrifying, if you are watching it happen to your child? 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 10

So, again, how does Sensory Integration get messed up? If an immune system can’t keep up, if the T- cells can’t adequately kill the pathogens, then they call in the B-cells. The B-cells bring inflammation, which is heat, water and swelling. The brain is an electrical machine. What happens when you bring water into an electrical machine? Nothing specialNothing special Big ProblemBig Problem 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 11

So, What Can You Do About This?  Help your child’s immune system to heal  Help your child to conquer these uncomfortable feelings through effective interventions: Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapy (OT) Applied Behavior Analysis Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Purposeful PlayPurposeful Play, Floor TimeFloor Tim Many other interventions are available. 17 WRONG! The early developmental years of a child are very important. If developmental delays occur, early intervention will give the child the best chance of healing and catching up. 5 Senses5 Senses Balance Body Position Tactile Why? InterventionsBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions 16
