2 What is it about Coaching that inspired the BBC to set up an internal network of over 60 coaches?

3 History may have the answer

4 In the 1930s a gentleman named George Gallup surveyed his family over the breakfast table interviewing them on their favourite food and pets

5 About 50 years later Gallup Research conducted interviews with 1 million employees including around 80,000 managers.

6 Their conclusion?

7 “People leave managers not companies”
Reproduced with kind permission, Marcus Buckingham -

8 What are managers & reports thinking?
My day is so full, I don’t always have time to spend with my team My manager does not give me enough attention My team does not take enough responsibility My manager does not give me enough freedom My team aren’t as experienced as me and I am reluctant to delegate My manager doesn’t seem to trust me to get on with things What are managers & reports thinking? Sometimes it is hard for managers to strike the right balance My team don’t seem to do what I tell them to and I keep having to chase My manager is constantly barking orders at me I don’t know what the people in my team want I shouldn’t have to say it, my manager should know what I want Sometimes I’m not sure whether I should be telling or asking I wish my manager would make his mind up
