5 TURNING POINTS YOUTH PARENT CENTER IS HELPING THEM REACH THEIR GOAL The mission of Turning Points is to assist youth parents and their children in reaching their full potential as graduates, parents and citizens by providing programs and services that enable them to successfully complete their education and develop effective parenting and life skills.

6 Statistics In the Greater Moncton Area: Approximately every 3 days a young mother, 19 years or younger, gives birth in a Moncton Area hospital. Most young mothers & fathers drop out of school before the birth of their baby. Fifty five percent of youth parents receive little or no support from their families.

7 A youth pregnancy… Places two generations at risk Is a turning point in the life of the youth parents and their family With support, youth parents can become effective parents, finish high school and go on to further their education.

8 Turning Points provides: Transportation Childcare Services Parenting/Life/Employability Skills Training CALP (Community Adult Learning Program) Learning & Resource Center Food for Thought Bi-weekly Support Groups Pregnancy Prevention

9 Cost of Doing Nothing To keep a teen parent 16 years of age or older with one child It will cost… ON SOCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR 18 YEARS More than $200,000 On assistance for three years of high school Approximately $34,000 On assistance for two years of post-secondary education, with a student loan Approximately $23,000 What’s the financial cost of inaction? The difference between five years of support while a young mother gets her education enabling her to work and support herself and paying support through her entire child- rearing life. More than $141,000 These figures do not include extra help with medical, transportation, and heat supplements as well as welfare costs after child turns 18.
