Website  Why should we have a website?  part of our commitment to CERF  change the way we are doing business and deliver taxonomy  increase sharing of information and knowledge as global public goods – getting it out there  wider communities with common interests  encourage the taxonomists of the future  What to include?  information about the hub – what it is and who’s involved  project details, research information and results  biodiversity information portal – public accessible databases  students, ECR’s, workshops  news, events, publications, products, links

 Wikis are simple, efficient tools for managing knowledge and collaborating  Easy to learn and use  Online  users can access, collaborate, share content, knowledge and files anytime, anywhere  Removes corporate barriers  Knowledge isn’t locked into hard drives, servers, intranets or other management systems  Reduces the number of emails in your inbox  Email overload, version control, not CC’ed on reply and missed discussion, bog down inbox with attachments  Exceptionally flexible  able to customise, connect to other applications, databases What is a wiki

Why should we use a wiki  Lets you collaborate online  Improve and democratise communication  Every user gets a voice and everyone's contribution is seen, heard, and can be commented upon  Information gets to the right people  Makes it easy to keep all your information current and accurate  Information is dynamic  Keeps your information safe – logs who did what and when, view changes made by different users or rollback to previous versions  Becomes a repository of knowledge that evolves

How we make a wiki  Firstly we must have a purpose  a new culture of communication and information sharing  a communication tool for the hub  Start with a basic structure and build on as it evolves  calendar, workplans, reports, meetings, collaborative work on documents, eg. Strategic Communication Plan  wikis within wikis, security  Clearly outline the guidelines for use and disclaimers  Select a suitable software (depending on features)  Set up user logins  Encourage you to use it and see the advantages

Development of website and wikis  What else would you like to see on the website?  How would you like to see the wikis working within the hub and within your project?  Image contributions greatly accepted  Feedback on structure and design welcome www.taxonomy.org.au/internal/index.htm
