2 This Is Kiwanis K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 2 Founded in 1915, Kiwanis International is a thriving organization of service-minded men, women, and youth who respond to the unique needs in their communities. As a collective group, more than 8,000 Kiwanis clubs in more than 80 countries address worldwide issues by “Serving the Children of the World.” The organization’s International Office is in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Purpose: To improve the quality of life for children and families worldwide. Mission: As a thriving organization of men, women, and youth, we are dedicated to serving the children of the world and improving the quality of life worldwide. Vision: We will be the world’s premier organization engaging adult and youth volunteers to improve the quality of life worldwide.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

5 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 5 Worldwide Service Focus Young Children: Priority One is a program supported by Kiwanis International and thousands of clubs worldwide. It focuses on maternal and child health, child care and development, parent education and support, and safety and pediatric trauma. The Worldwide Service Project is a Kiwanis- family initiative in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to virtually eliminate the world’s leading cause of preventable mental retardation, iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).

8 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 8 Organization Structure Kiwanis International is the worldwide organization to which each Kiwanis club and member belongs. It is administered by the Kiwanis International Board of Trustees. Our District ( Florida ) is one of 47 districts in Kiwanis International. Our Division ( 19 ) is one of 27 divisions in the district. Our Club ( Fort Myers Metro-McGregor ) is one of 16 clubs in our division.

20 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 20 Our Club’s Sponsored Programs BUG (Bringing Up Grades) A program designed to provide recognition to students who raise their grades to an acceptable range, and maintain or continue to raise them from one grading period to the next. Recognition includes being placed on the school's BUG Honor Roll; a pizza, ice cream, or other food-themed party; and presentation of certificates, pins, and other giveaways. K-KIDS K-Kids is a "student-led" community-service organization for students in grades 3 through 5, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body. BUILDERS CLUB Builders Club is the largest service organization for middle school students (ages 12 to 14), and is student led. Community-based Builders Clubs also may be established at community facilities such as churches and libraries. You are encouraged to attend their presentations.

21 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 21 Attendance & Absences Active participation is encouraged. There is no mandatory minimum attendance requirement, but members are encouraged to attend whenever they can Volunteer opportunities are varied and numerous enough that most members should be able to participate in at least two or three a year.

22 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 22 Club Dues How Your Dues Are Spent $150.00 - Total Yearly Dues Billed October 1st $42.00 Kiwanis International Dues Dues are waived for two years for former members of a Kiwanis Sponsored Program, joining Kiwanis, regardless of their age. $8.00 Kiwanis International Magazine Subscription Fee $12.00 Kiwanis International Liability Insurance $25.00 Florida District Dues $63.00 Metro-McGregor Club Annual Dues Includes Florida Kiwanis Foundation sustaining membership and new member add fees. Florida District Bylaws provide for an annual Club Convention Assessment of $60.00. This is a club assessment, not an individual assessment.

25 K I W A N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Kiwanis International 2002 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 25 Conventions The Annual Kiwanis International Convention is an excellent event, which allows clubs from around the world to exchange ideas, participate in forums, and share fellowship. The District Convention is the kickoff for the new Kiwanis year, which runs from October to September. Club officers and interested members attend. The District Midyear Education Day gives members an opportunity to attend classes and forums about club operation and other exciting topics.

Its mission: “To assist Kiwanis International in serving the children of the world.” The Kiwanis International Foundation: Awards grants. Raises funds. Administers awards. District The Mission of the Florida Kiwanis Foundation, as stated in its By-laws, is to secure funds, bequests, and other suitable and appropriate means and to expend these funds in support of the objectives of the Kiwanis clubs and their sponsored youth organizations in the Florida District of Kiwanis International.
