THE CHURCH IS CATHOLIC

VIDEO CLIPS ON CHURCH AS “CATHOLIC” Comedian: Thou Shalt Laugh Movie: Freedom Writers Catholics Come Home

WHAT DOES THE WORD CATHOLIC MEAN? 830 Catholic means “universal” in the sense of “according to the totality” or “in keeping with the whole”

WHY IS THE CHURCH CATHOLIC? 830-831 First, the Church is catholic because Christ is present in her, and she contains the fullness of the means of salvation (totality). Secondly, the Church is catholic because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race.

BIG ‘C’/ LITTLE ‘C’ CATHOLIC Big ‘C’ Catholic refers to the Catholic Church that was founded by Christ Little ‘c’ catholic refers to the universality of the Church, containing the fullness of Christ and having a mission to all people

TO WHAT DOES THE WORD “CHURCH” REFER? 1.Entire community of God’s people around the world 2.Diocese (local community) 3.Community assembled for liturgy (parish)

WHY DOES THE CHURCH STRIVE TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO ALL HUMANKIND? 849 Having been divinely sent to the nations that she might be the “universal sacrament of salvation,” the Church in obedience to the command of her founder and because it is demanded by her own essential universality, strives to preach the Gospel to all “humankind.”

ON WHAT IS THE LORD’S MISSIONARY MANDATE ULTIMATELY GROUNDED? 850 The Lord’s missionary mandate is ultimately grounded in the eternal love of the Most Holy Trinity...The ultimate purpose of her mission is none other than to make men share in the communion between the Father and the Son in their Spirit of Love.

WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION FOR THE CHURCH’S MISSIONARY EFFORTS? 851 It is from God’s love for all men that the Church in every age receives both the obligation and the vigor of her missionary dynamism, for the love of Christ urges us on. Indeed, God desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth... The Church, to whom this truth has been entrusted, must go out to meet their desire, as to bring them to the truth. Because she believes in God’s universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary.

URGED ON BY THE SPIRIT, WHAT ROAD MUST THE CHURCH WALK IN THE COURSE OF HISTORY? 852 The Church, urged on by the Spirit of Christ, must walk the road Christ Himself walked, a way of poverty and obedience, of service and self-sacrifice even to death…So it is that “the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.”

IN HER PILGRIMAGE ON EARTH, WHAT DISCREPANCY HAS THE CHURCH EXPERIENCED? 853 On her pilgrimage, the Church has also experienced the “discrepancy existing between the message she proclaims and the human weakness of those to whom the Gospel has been entrusted.” Only by taking the “way of penance and renewal,” the “narrow way of the Cross,” can the People of God extend Christ's reign.

WHY DO BELIEVERS PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS TO THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW IT? 856 Believers proclaim the Good News to those who do not know it, in order to consolidate, complete, and raise up the truth and the goodness that God has distributed among people and nations, and to purify them from error and evil “for the glory of God, the confusion of the demon, and the happiness of men and women.”

REMEMBER: The Church HAS IT ALL: Christ’s presence--Full means of salvation Fullness of Truth Fullness of faith Fullness of Seven Sacraments Fullness of ordained ministry The Church CALLS TO ALL: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” (Mt. 28:19) Mission: Gather all people from all times together as one People of God

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS: BLOCK 8 Why is the Church not a sum of particular churches? (835) Missionary Mandate? (where? why? how? who?) Why not just focus on strengthening the faith of those who already believe? Salvation outside of the Church? Outside of Christianity? (~846) How do we know it’s the Holy Spirit? “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” (Galatians 5:22-23).

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS: BLOCK 3 Discrepancy—what is it, and what do we do about it? Why would the Spirit want us to walk the road of poverty? Why isn’t there only one Church (many branches of Christianity exist today)? Missionary mandate, salvation, and other religions. How do people who don’t know Christ or aren’t Catholic get to Heaven? (CCC 839-845= “The Church and Non-Christians” + Nostra Aetate) "Outside the Church there is no salvation" 846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body: Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation…This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church: Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.
