2 National 4 & 5 Modern Studies National 4 and National 5 Modern Studies will cover the same three units: –Democracy in Scotland and the UK (The Scottish Political System) –Social Issues in the UK (Crime and the Law) –International Issues (The USA)

3 N4 Modern Studies Assessments Pupils will be assessed in the following ways: 1.Unit Assessments 2.Added Value Unit (an assignment)

4 N4 Modern Studies Unit Assessments During the course of S4, pupils will sit one assessment on each of the following units: –Democracy in Scotland and the UK (The Scottish Political System) –Social Issues in the UK (Crime and the Law) –International Issues (The USA) They will usually be at the end of the topic and are marked as pass / fail. Pupils get the opportunity to re-sit a failed assessment once.

5 N4 Modern Studies AVU Assessment Pupils also complete an Added Value Unit, which is an assignment. This will be on a topic or issue from one of the following units: –Democracy in Scotland and the UK –Social Issues in the UK –International Issues This is also marked as pass / fail.

6 N4 Modern Studies Qualification A pass in all 3 units as well as the AVU will gain pupils a pass in National 4 Modern Studies. There is no final exam.

7 N5 Modern Studies Assessments Pupils will be assessed in the following ways: 1.Unit Assessments 2.Added Value Unit (an assignment) 3.Final exam

The assignment is worth 25% of the overall marks for the Course assessment.

10 N5 Modern Studies AVU Assessment The Assignment will be completed in class, but sent to the SQA for marking.

11 N5 Modern Studies Final Exam Pupils will also sit an end of year final exam. This question paper will be set and marked by SQA. Pupils will complete this in one hour and 30 minutes. This question paper has three sections (Democracy, Social Issues & International Issues). Each section will have three questions: two questions will assess knowledge and understanding; the third question will assess evaluating skills using sources.

12 N5 Modern Studies Final Exam Each section is worth 20 marks. This question paper is worth 75% of the overall marks for the Course assessment.

13 N5 Modern Studies Qualification Students must pass all 3 Unit Assessments during the course of the year. Scores from the Assignment and the Question Paper will be added together and a grade awarded from A-D.

15 National 4 & 5 History National 4 and National 5 History will cover the same three units: –Scottish History (Scottish Wars of Independence) –British History (Changing Britain 1760 – 1900) –European and World History (Hitler & Nazi Germany 1919 – 1939)

25 N5 History Final Exam Pupils will be asked to show the following skills across the three sections: –to describe an event or development, – explain an event or development, –analyse a historical issue, –place a source in its historical context –compare two sources –evaluate the usefulness of a source.

26 N5 History Final Exam Each section is worth 20 marks. This question paper is worth 75% of the overall marks for the Course assessment.

27 N5 History Qualification Students must pass all 3 Unit Assessments during the course of the year. Scores from the Assignment and the Question Paper will be added together and a grade awarded from A-D.
