E- BOOKS IN FINNISH LIBRARIES  E-books are borrowed in many Finnish libraries, mostly via Ellibs –service, but not in great quantities, no new titles.  There are far more non-fiction than fiction e-books.  Bigger libraries lend out also e-book devices either with or without content.  Helsinki and Oulu libraries among others have lent Samsung tablets which contain titles published by CrimeTime publishing house in cooperation with ElisaKirja (telephone operator)  Other reading devices have been lent without content around Finland. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES PROJECTS IN HELSINKI  2005: Ellibs  2008-09: net music services under consideration, for example Sony service  2009: digital texts and reading devices were studied ; the project received subsidies from the Ministry of Education and culture in order to examine the net disseminating of music and texts via the Internet  Both projects continued in 2010, Electronic resources for the public libraries –project was launched and it also became a part of the electronic resources for public libraries project under the United Nations patronage. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 12

EVOLVING COOPERATION  Negotiations with Sony in 2008 did not result in agreement  Negotiations with The Finnish Broadcastin Company concerning radio plays fell through due to the broadcasting company’s organisational restructuring.  Funding for the digital texts and e-reading devices for the library use was applied from the Ministry of Education and the project received the funding  A major e-book meeting convened in January 2010 which included publishers, National Library, Ministry of Education and Culture, booksellers, writer / author organisations etc. In sum, all important actors in book publishing. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 13

THE TIME WAS NOT RIPE!  The participants came to the conclusion that it was an important issue but that the time for e-book was not ripe in Finland!  However, e-book markets were discussed in connection with the Next Media project but the library was excluded from the project despite the fact that we asked to be included in the project.  A year later a major publisher together with book supplier contacted us and we organised a joint meeting. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 14

PROGRESS IN 2011  Library field’s own taskforce: Digital resources for public libraries in an effort to create understanding within the library field in order to recognise the challenges in the whole of Finland, and later as a training project to support the consortium  Negotiations for distributing e-books directly via borrowable reading devices: in cooperation with ElisaKirja, Samsung and Crime Time publishers 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 15

NEXT MEDIA PROJECT: E-BOOKS FOR LIBRARIES  From beginning of 2012 Helsinki City Library was invited to participate in the new phase of Next Media project: E-books for libraries. National Library was put in charge of the project, but the day-to-day development work has been done by Helsinki City Library together with Ellibs-service, VTT(Technical Research Centre of Finland) and Aalto University.  Also some publishers and book delivers are cooperating with us. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 16

FORWARD IN COOPERATION!  EReading project resulted in good channels for cooperation with the whole literary field: publishers, and through publishing consortium such big publishers as Otava and Bonnier participated in the project.  We have frankly told the publishers of our limitations but at the same time told them that we understand their revenue models. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 18

Together we studied both usability factors as well as licensing and pricing models. 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 19

DIFFERING POINTS OF VIEW Publishers seek a system in which:  Monitoring of royalty payments and  lending rights is easy Libraries seeks a system in which:  costs don’t escalate uncontrollably and  total price does not exceed that of printed materials  materials can be managed and controlled: lending rights (licences) can be granted and cancelled 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 20

E-BOOK PROJECTS  2012: Overdrive, English language books  2012: Next Media EReading, Ebib, Otava and Edita books, including experiments with browser reading  2012: Cooperation with Samsung, ELISA and CrimeTime, borrowable tablets in Oulu and Helsinki  2013: EReading together with eBib project will continue, licensing models will be studied as well as social reading and dissemination of metadata  2013: Cooperation with Elisa company will continue at least in terms of a digital reading circle 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 21

THE DIGITAL LIBRARY We also want our customers to feel at home… 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 22

SUMMING UP OF THE 2013 DIGITAL RESOURCES  Old Ellibs and its new pilot version eBib for domestic lending; streaming part of the eBib  Overdrive for lending English language e-books  Naxos Music Library is the only service provider in music sector  PressDisplay and Epress continue in newspaper and magazine sector  Zinio to be part of the English language periodicals  Indieflix will soon be distributed (as soon as age limit checks have been implemented)  Lending of the downloaded reader devices will also continue for example in reading circles.  Experiment with social reading circle in cooperation with ElisaKirja in September 10.1.2015 Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto 23
