1 Learning Intentions - Today, we will address these College Readiness Standards in Reading: 1.Main Idea and Author’s Intent 2.Sequential Relationships 3.Supporting Details 4.Meanings of Words 5.Generalizations and Conclusions Success Criteria – I am successful if I… 1.Identify a main idea. 2.Recognize a sequence of events. 3.Identify an important detail. 4.Use context clues to help define a word. 5.Recognize the conclusion to a passage. 11 th Grade Reading CPW

2 11 th Grade Notes Take 7 minutes to carefully read the entire passage. If you see a word you don’t understand, keep reading and use context clues to guess the word’s meaning. There will be 5 questions this week. You will have 2 minutes to work on each question individually. You will have 1 minute to work on each question as a group.

3 #1 – After reading paragraphs 1-4, what do we know about Mercedes? A – Mercedes doesn’t understand how to operate a dog sled. B – Mercedes is angry with Hal for whipping the dogs. C – Mercedes is abusing the dogs. D – Mercedes is preventing the dogs from pulling the sled.

4 #2 – In paragraph 5, how does Buck take revenge on Hal? A – He bites Hal in the leg. B – He causes the sled to overturn. C – He refuses to listen to Hal. D – He trips Hal, causing him to fall.

5 #3 – According to paragraph 8, what is Buck’s newest problem? A – The new dogs won’t follow his lead. B – He has to control a team of 14 dogs on a long journey. C – The new dogs are eating too much food. D – The new dogs aren’t able to help the team.

6 #4 – In paragraph 7, what is the best definition of the word “inexorable”? A – Unattractive B – Unbelievable C – Uncontrollable D – Unavoidable

7 #5 – How does the author use paragraph 9 to foreshadow future events? A – The author explains that the dogs are exhausted. B – The author explains why pulling a sled with 14 dogs is a bad idea. C – The author portrays the humans as being unrealistically confident. D – The author portrays the journey to Dawson as being impossible.

8 CPW 11 th Grade Reading OK, repeat the questions with your squad members. Discuss and argue with your group members about what the correct answers are. 90 seconds per question for Squad Mode. After the group answers, trade answer sheets and launch the Answers Video.
