2 INTRODUCTION The Tamilnadu Nursing Council is the earliest Nursing Council in the whole South-East Asia. The Assent of the British Government, a vital legislation for regulating the Nursing training and practice was passed by the Legislature was made on 7 th May 1926 and signed by the Governor General on the 9 th June 1926. The same was published in Fort St. George Gazette on the 29 th June 1926. It is called the Madras Nurses and Midwives Act 1926. It was amended as per Nurses and Midwives Act VII of 1934 and Act XXVI(26) of 1960, till today we follow the same.

3 This Council is an autonomous statutory registration body for registering qualified Nurses, Midwives, Auxiliary-Nurse-Midwives /Multipurpose Health Workers / Health Visitors as per the provisions of the Act. It extend its registration to Union Territories ie: Pondicherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The main purpose is to excelling Nursing education in Tamil Nadu. To produce adequate competent nurses to practice within the frame work of legal and ethical component. The syllabus and regulation are framed by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, so as to impart the uniform standard of nursing education throughout India. Besides the State Nursing Council is giving recognition to the institution approved by the State Government which are fulfilling the guidelines and norms/minimum requirements of INC. Subsequently registering the qualification of the candidates passed out from these institution within the State obtained by the recognized examining bodies. (i.e. University - for Collegiate programme, Boards - Diploma programme). 17 FITNESS TO PRACTICE All the candidates who have possessed recognized nursing qualification obtained from the recognized examining bodies ie., University / Boards should register their qualification under this Council as per the Act to become a registered NURSE / MIDWIFE / AUXILARY NURSE MIDWIFE / HELTH VISITOR. So as to practice their profession legal and safe manner by obtaining Registration Number by this Council. Candidates Register under this Council will be eligible to Practice in Tamil Nadu.
