2 INTRODUCTION PROTOCOL
It is indeed a great pleasure to be here today to share ideas and experiences at this Sensitization Workshop with the theme: “OEM Requirements for Automotive Local Components Manufacturing” organised by Centre for Automotive Design and Development (CADD)in conjunction with National Automotive Council(NAC). The Standards Organisation is delighted to present this paper on “ISO Quality System Certification for Automotive Component Manufacturers”.

3 INTRODUCTION Customers are key to any business sustainability and without satisfied customers, an organization is in peril! To keep customers satisfied, the organization needs to meet their requirements as well as exceed their expectations. Delighting customers is a slogan organizations should adopt in their day to day basis. The ISO 9001 standard provides a tried and tested framework for taking a systematic approach to managing the organization's processes in-order to meet customers’ requirements thereby enhancing their satisfaction.

4 INTRODUCTION The topic of discourse is crucial to this sector if you are to be competitive in Nigeria and beyond borders. I therefore wish to congratulate the Organizers for their efforts and initiatives in putting together this forum. I believe that the outcome of the forum will go a long way to have a positive impact in your organizations.

Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) was established by an Enabling Act No. 56 of 1971 Sole statutory body that is vested with the responsibility of standardising and regulating the quality of products in Nigeria. 7 WHAT WE DO Elaboration of Nigerian Industrial standards covering both products and services. 1 Collaboration with government, non-governmental and multilateral agencies 2 Monitoring compliance to standards through factory inspection visits. 3

8 WHAT WE DO Calibrate measuring equipment to ensure accuracy of measurement of equipment. 4 Investigate consumer complaints and assist manufacturers in taking corrective action(s). 5 Carrying out market surveys to identify fake and substandard products and ensure that quality products are put to sale in the markets. 6

9 WHAT WE DO Registration Product to have data base of products in the markets for traceability and to identify standards to be developed. 7 Harmonization of standards with other nations to remove trade barriers and allow for exchange of goods and services. 8 Certification of Organisations to ISO 9001, 14001, 18001, and to enhance our competitiveness in international market. 9

10 WHAT WE DO SON conducts in-house and out door training for business managers on quality, environmental, food safety and Occupational Health and Safety management systems. 10 Pre-shipment/destination inspections to prevent substandard products from entering the country through SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP). 11 Certifying products that meet requirements to standards through Mandatory Conformity Programme (MANCAP) and Nigerian Industrial Standard schemes. 12

13 ISO 9001 Today’s workshop is focusing on certification to ISO Quality Management Systems Requirements. ISO 9001 specifies the basic requirements for a quality management system (QMS) that an organization must fulfill to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products (which include services) that enhance customer satisfaction and meet applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

14 ISO 9001 It requires the organization to document and demonstrate a sequence and interaction of processes, conduct internal audits to evaluate processes, determine corrective and preventive action to improve processes, and monitor the processes to ensure there is continual improvement

15 IMPLEMENTING ISO 9001 QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Implementation of ISO 9001 affects the entire organization right from the start. If pursued with total dedication, it results in 'cultural transition' to an atmosphere of continuous improvement. The process of implementing ISO 9001 depends on: The sophistication of your existing quality program, The size of your organization, The complexity of your process. ISO 9001 is a generic standard that is applicable all Organization no matter the size.

30 CERTIFICATION Is the process by which a party gives a written assurance that a product, service, system, process or material conforms to specific requirements (a standard). It is the second leg supporting the conformity assessment process. There are hundreds of certification bodies around the world. SON is the National certification body for Nigeria.

41 CONCLUSION ISO 9001 certification is a globally recognized process.
The 9001 standard is not a law, not a regulation but it is much worse!!!. It is customer requirements. You are called upon today to take a decision and get your system certified to ISO 9001 in-order to remain globally relevant and enjoy the enormous benefits associated with the certification .
