5 WHAT IS THE DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM? 6 HOW IS THE PROGRAM DEFINED?  “Dually” enrolled in high school and college  Earn high school graduation credits  Earn college credits

7 What is the ACCEL Program?  It is a collaborative effort between GDOE and the Board of Regents whereby high school students take academic college courses to receive both high school credit and postsecondary credit.  The program is administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, but funded by the state. www.gsfc.org www.gsfc.org

8 WHAT IS THE ACCEL-award?  Students attending public institutions receive Tuition Tuition Students are responsible for books and fees Students are responsible for books and fees  Students attending private institutions receive up to $3,000 per academic year for full-time enrollment (or a pro-rated amount for less than full-time attendance).

9 who is eligible to participate in the ACCEL PROGRAM? who is eligible to participate in the ACCEL PROGRAM?  Students must be classified as a legal resident of Georgia.  Students must meet citizenship requirements.  Students must meet Selective Service Registration requirements.  Students must be in compliance with Georgia’s Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990.  Students must meet the postsecondary school’s admissions requirements.

10 How long will a student be eligible?  Accel is not available during Summer terms.  Accel hours will NOT be included in the 127 semester/190 quarter HOPE Combined-Paid-Hours limitation.  Once high school requirements are met, the student can no longer continue to attend school.

11 WHAT IS THE MOVE ON WHEN READY (MOWR) PROGRAM?  Provides opportunities for high school juniors and seniors to enroll full-time in postsecondary institutions to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.  Students may not be enrolled in classes at BHS.  Students may participate in extra- curricular activities at BHS

12 HOW IS THIS (MOWR) DIFFERENT FROM THE ACCEL PROGRAM?  Accel : Full-time or part-time  State funded  Colleges require a lower GPA  MOWR : Must attend college full-time  FTE funded-State Department of Education  Pays for tuition & fees  College must agree to accept State’s payment

13 WHERE CAN STUDENTS TAKE THESE CLASSES?  Any unit of the University System of Georgia  A branch of the Technical College System of Georgia  A private independent nonprofit postsecondary institution eligible for tuition equalization grants  A private proprietary postsecondary institution eligible for tuition equalization grants

16 What are the Other DUAL ENROLLMENT Programs? 17 HOW DO STUDENTS MAINTAIN ELIGIBILITY?  Be a full-time student for a minimum of 12 semester hours or the equivalent quarter hours after the drop/add period.  Students who drop below full-time status for any reason during the term forfeit their eligibility to continue in MOWR program and will return to their local high school.  Students may not switch programs during a semester.

36 STUDENT’s RESPONSIBILITY  Student initiated and student managed…  Complete schedule changes for BHS.  Maintain contact w/ BHS for graduation and extra-curricular activities.  Request that transcripts be sent to the high school each semester.

37 Of Equal Importance …  It is important to have a serious and open discussion about your postsecondary educational and career goals.  A high school student’s social and emotional maturity can often be the major determinant of success for the program.

38 What Is The Procedure?  Register/Take S.A.T.,A.C.T., or COMPASS  Make an appointment to meet with your BHS counselor & Dual Enrollment coordinator.  Complete Declaration of Intent form, and turn it in to Counseling Office.  Complete the Advisement/Contact Information Form. Information Form.

41 AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED FOR COLLEGE…….  Contact the Dual Enrollment representative at the selected college to schedule an advisement conference.  Register for college classes ASAP.

42 AFTER YOU HAVE REGISTERED For CLASSES …….  Attend mandatory Advisement Session at B.H.S in August (date to be announced).  Provide Accel Coordinator with letter of acceptance letter of acceptance copy of schedule copy of schedule

43 Final application process  Student completes “Student Section” of ACCEL Program Application Online (Part I) Paper application for MOWR & Residential programs  High School completes “High School Section” of Accel Application (Part II)  College completes “College Section” of ACCEL Application (Part III)  Completed application is forwarded to GSFC and college invoices to GSFC These forms are found at www.gsfc.org

44 WHAT ABOUT EXTRA- CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES?  S tudents are eligible to participate in all interscholastic activities, with few exceptions (with a minimun of 2.1 credits).  Must meet all the requirements, schedules, and conditions to be able to participate.  In some cases this may not be possible due to class schedule conflicts.

45 Advantages  Offers excellent means of “getting ahead”  Offers flexibility for the mature, responsible student  Eases the transition from high school to college  Saves money

46 Disadvantages  NO GUARANTEES!  Must meet demands of 2 schools  Requires maturity and responsibility  Can impact graduation  Some colleges, especially outside Georgia may not accept credits awarded by the college.  Check with the school.
