Campaign for Independence A Web Quest on Philippine History for First Year High School

INTRODUCTION Change is the only permanent thing in the world, and during the times when people were fenced-in, education a privilege, government an iron-arm, and the spirit crushed, change could be radical. And radical would be relative depending on what faction you are in, what rights you are fighting for, and oftentimes, what blood courses through your veins.

TASK You are a representative at the investigative studies of the Historia de España en el Filipinas Internacional (History of Spain in the Philippines, International). You are given different cases about the Spanish times, and your task is to review, analyze, and formulate conclusions, opinions, and justifications based on your readings. The main proposition is what and who was most effective and affective of the different emergent factions. After which, you will defend your case in a moot court. Acting like judges are the Board of Directors composed of various Filipino and Spanish historians and lawyers.

PROCESS This Web Quest is designed to help describe the situations, factors, and effects of the various ways Filipinos rallied for change during Spains rule. STEP 1: TAKING SIDES You will group yourselves according to the different factions which arose during the Spanish times: –LoyalistsLoyalists –ReformistsReformists –RevolutionistsRevolutionists

STEP 2: CONSOLIDATE WITH YOUR COUNCIL –Meet with your other group mates and choose one topic or statement, which will be the core of your defenses and affronts at the court trial. All your readings should form the framework of this statement because your justifications and opinions will revolve around it. Know your readings well. STEP 3: STATE YOUR CASE –Each of the group would have a councilor who would present their summary of their testimonies, readings, and evidences. Try to be creative as possible; actual pictures and artifacts would make your arguments more convincing to the Board of Directors.

EVALUATION CATEGORY and SCORE 321 The claimI make a claim and explain why it is controversial. My claim is buried, confused and/or unclear. I dont say what my argument or claim is. Reasons in support of the claim I give clear and accurate reasons in support of my claim. I give one or two weak reasons that dont support my claim and/or irrelevant or confusing reasons. I do not give convincing reasons in support of my claim. Reasons against my claim I discuss the reasons against my claim and explain why it is valid anyway. I say that there are reasons against the claim but I dont discuss them. I do not acknowledge or discuss the reasons against the claim. OrganizationMy writing has a compelling opening, an informative middle and a satisfying conclusion. My writing is organized but sometimes gets off topic. My writing is aimless and disorganized. Voice and tone It sounds like I care about my argument. I show how I think and feel about it. My tone is OK but my paper could have been written by anyone. I need to tell more about how I think and feel. My writing is too formal or too informal. It sounds like I dont like the topic of the presentation. Word choiceThe words I use are striking but natural, varied, and vivid. I make routine word choices.I use the same words over and over and over. Some words may be confusing to the listener. Sentence fluency My sentences are clear, complete, and of varying lengths. I have well-constructed sentences but have some fragments. Man run-ons, fragments and awkward phrasings make my essay hard to read. ConventionsI use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I generally use correct conventions.
