3 SSgt Parker is ok as is Mrs Parker. He has thanked me for my support to his wife but is disappointed with perceived lack of support from the rest of the unit. First pilot on Fri 18 Nov at RGH for Cwm Taf LHB. Not the expected turn out but from our point of view it was a success. Next up is Cardiff & Vale ULHB. Scheduled meeting 25 Jan 12 with a view to providing a similar training day for nurses currently undertaking RCN CLP programme on 23 Feb 12. Forecast of PQO Commissioning Boards at 2 Med Bde up to Mar 13 have been released and will be forwarded via to PSAOs. OCdt Cooper is on the Board for interview only in Jan 12 as he is an AOSB pass. Mitch and I will be Assessors for the Board and I have been asked to act as Secretary. I have asked and had agreement for 3 places for Mar 12 – Rebecca Madge F2 Dr at C Sqn, Laura Pritchard – EHO HQ Sqn and OCdt Po F2 Dr A Sqn. To that end I intend to run a pre PQO ACB training day on Sat 25 Feb 12. AMS TA Brochure is nearing completion and will be available in the New Year. In the meantime SO2 Recruiting will be sending out 200 A6 size 3 fold flyers in the next week or so. RFCA have informed me that there is a small amount of money available to support ‘Bring a Friend’ evenings. If I could ask PSAOs to let me know when they want to run one I will ask what monies are available to help fund it. I have also got some money to buy a portable TV/DVD player to take out recruiting for each Sqn and also for business cards. A Community Covenant is an initiative between MOD and local authorities which is basically a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local Armed Forces to compliment the Armed Forces Covenant. It has come about as a result of one of the outcomes of the Armed Forces Covenant Task Force report. The level of support nationally is at unprecedented levels over recent years. This initiative aims to build on that support and translate it into solid projects. It aims to provide more inclusion in local community activities and better use of local amenities and services. This will include not being disadvantaged for school places for service children, access to local healthcare and in some cases social housing on leaving the Service. Local authorities in some areas already allow free access to swimming pools, free library membership etc to Armed Forces personnel and their families. It also hopes to encourage local businesses to assist where they can by offering discounts or indeed by offering employment to the families of Service personnel. Units are encouraged to promote activity that integrates the Service community into civilian life and by helping the civilian community develop a better understanding of the Armed Forces. It is definitely a two way arrangement and it is hoped that there will be opportunities for the Armed Forces to support their local communities in a variety of ways which may include regeneration projects or participating in educational or sporting events. In May 2011 the Defence Secretary announced £30M of funding has been made available over the next four years to support it. The monies will be used to support projects at local level which strengthen the ties between the Armed Forces and the community in which they live. The lead in Wales is Comd 160 (Wales) Bde through his DCOS. DCOS will be speaking to a gathering of local authority officials at WAG early next year but in the meantime units need to be aware of this scheme as we may be approached by a local authority for more information so we must be prepared to act as first point of contact to initiate this work. You can direct the enquirer to DCOS HQ 160 X, the MOD website or they can send an to where their enquiry will be answered.
