19 More water stuff n A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing. n Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79% and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

23 Osmosis n Think back to solutions: solutes and solvents n Osmosis is the process by which water molecules diffuse across a cell membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. n Direction of movement depends on relative concentrations of solutions.

25 What about the molecules that cant pass through the membrane freely? n Glucose, Na+, Ca+, K+ and lots of other molecules need to get into and out of the cell but cant get through the lipid bilayer n They must use the proteins embedded in the lipid bilayer – and this takes type of transport takes energy
