1-1 Order of Operations Objective (things to learn): In this section you will need to learn how to use the order of operations to evaluate algebraic expressions. Order of Operations 1. First do operations that happen within grouping symbols (Parenthesis). 2. Then evaluate exponents or powers. 3. Next, do multiplication and division from left to right. 4. Finally do addition and subtraction from left to right.

1-1 Order of Operations Let’s do some example. Do not forget to SHOW YOUR WORK:-) Example 1 Evaluate the following expression when x = 6. Substitute 6 for x. Simplify. Simplify 4·36. Simplify 144 + 8.

1-1 Order of Operations Example 2 Evaluate each expression. a. b.

Example 2Continued 1-1 Order of Operations c.d.

1-1 Order of Operations Example 3 Evaluate each expression. a. b. Notice in both of these problems, using the order of operations we do these from Left to Right.

1-1 Order of Operations Example 4 Evaluate each expression. a. b. Notice in both of these problems, using the order of operations division first then addition and subtraction from left to right.
