Tuesday, 18 January 2011 Bell-work: Please get ready to turn in your Alphabetic Diction final draft with all rough drafts & word lists. Homework: Characters & Setting Sketch Due Today: Alphabetic Diction Final Drafts Agenda: Magazines Characters & Setting Sketch

2 Using your magazine, pick out two characters that can speak with one another. Cut out the image, glue it to a piece of paper, and write a ½ page character sketch: give them a name, an occupation, physical description, relationship status, hobbies, and other pertinent information. Also keep an eye out for an image that could represent the setting. Sometimes you can find a character in a setting already, but you may have to find a separate image.

3 Write a description of the setting you chose. What’s the name of the place? Who lives there or what happens there? When is it (time period/year)? Why is it interesting?

4 1 Page Character & Setting Sketch Names – Agnomination Ages Occupations Hobbies/Interests Motivation – what gets these people out of bed in the morning? Relationship/Family Status Where does the story take place? Does it have a name? When does it take place (year/season)? Who lives there? What is it like there? What makes it an interesting setting?

5 Learning Objectives: You will understand the critical use of detail in creative writing. You will locate exemplary use of detail in a short story.
