6 Sawgrass Smart-Highway Project
Early Winners Project Part of the Turnpike’s Larger Smart-Highways Initiative Deploys the Following on Sawgrass: Arterial DMS prior to each interchange AVI/Travel time system Speed monitoring sites (passive) RWIS stations Design/Build Contract Underway Summer ‘08 completion

7 Southern Arterial DMS Arterial DMS Added to 10 New Locations on Turnpike Mainline in South Florida Design/Build Contract Underway Early ‘09 Completion

8 Transition to a Smarter Highway
Our Safety Mission To have the safest limited access facility in North America by reducing incidences, eliminating fatalities and reduce duration of incident impact by 2020. Focus Areas Using technology to improve customer safety Roadway and infrastructure improvements Optimizing system operations Implementation of a dashboard

9 Infrastructure Planned or Underway
Travel Time (SunPass) System Speed Monitoring Systems Road Weather Information Stations Environmental Warning and Alert Systems ITS Cable Detection System

10 Visibility Monitoring/Alert System
Task: Develop low cost systems to allow our TMC operators to quantify sight restrictions due to fog, smoke, heavy rain, or a combination of all the above / And additional ways to advise customers of these conditions

11 Visibility Assessment Markers
Place markers at 300, 600, and 1000 feet from select cameras in fog prone areas as well as control burn areas which will allow operators to advise FHP and others of reduced visibility. One set per 10 miles in rural sections

12 Visibility Assessment Markers

13 Visibility Assessment Markers

14 C.B. Radio Alert System Two Test Locations:
Turkey Lake Service Plaza at milepost 263 Turnpike and I-95 at milepost 152 System Uses Voice-over-IP (VoIP) Technology to Send Audio System Uses “Off the Shelf” CB Radio Connected From TMC to Test Locations Over Turnpike ITS Fiber Network Broadcast Range of 5 to 15 Miles Depending on Conditions and Antenna Height

15 C.B. Radio Alert System 18' antenna is mounted at the top of selected camera poles. The height from the ground to the top of the antenna is no more than 60'. A power supply, an “off the shelf” CB radio, and a radio controller are the components inside of the cabinet on the camera pole
