1 2012 LTC District Lunch and Learn Charlane Noel, District Director James River District

2 Objectives: Describe the role of Districts in Virginia PTA structure. Identify ways your District supports your PTA. Determine leadership opportunities for you on the District Board. Answer your burning questions about Districts and District leadership.

3 Districts All Local Units are a part of a VA PTA District Districts are led by District Directors (not Presidents) District Directors sit on the VA PTA Board of Managers There are 21 Districts in Virginia Districts are made up of local units and Councils

4 FYI…Councils Local PTA may or may not be part of a council Established in a county, city or other entity Led by a Council President Council Presidents sit on the District Board There are currently only 28 active councils in Virginia Council Leadership is another great way to get involved

5 Districts Geographically established by VA PTA Board of Managers (BOM) Direct link to the state association for the local units All PTAs inside the district are members of the District PTA You do not pay dues to your District

6 Similarities- Districts and Councils Operate under membership-approved By-laws Have elected officers and an appointed Board Hold meetings/programs Market the value of PTA Provide support to local units Support organizing units Support struggling units

7 Responsibility of District Leadership and Training to local units Direct link from local units to state association Support Organizing units/councils Compliance – Status Reports from VA PTA Office – By-laws Revised – Dues Paid – 990/Audit

8 District Responsibilities: Organizing new units Update state about dissolving units Build future leadership

9 So Who Leads the Districts? Experienced Local PTA Presidents, Officers, and Committee Chairs Other local leaders Anyone with a desire to help local PTAs succeed

10 So You Want To Lead Areas with no DDs DDs elected in the Spring to 2 year terms; may serve up to 2 terms District Boards need Committee Chairs and officers
