The Hubble space telescope By: Moses Devanesan JANUARY 2010

What is the Hubble space telescope ?  The Hubble is a reflector telescope.  The Hubble space telescope gives NASA clear views of objects in outer space. It also has instruments to capture and deliver images to NASA.  The light collector mirror is as wide as 2.4m  The Hubble telescope is based on the Cassegrain telescope design.  It was named after Edwin Hubble, a great astronomer.

Hubble… ….in action

Hubble’s accomplishment’s  NASA now knows that the universe is 13.7 billion years old, thanks to Hubble.  Hubble showed NASA how planets are born.  Hubble sensed the first organic molecule on a planet outside our solar system.  The Hubble space telescope detected a supernova that suggests the universe started increasing it’s speed recently.  NASA now knows that almost every galaxy harbors super massive black holes.

Fun facts about the Hubble space telescope  Has been in outer space for 19 years.  Was supposed to be launched in 1985, but was delayed due to the space shuttle Challenger's explosion.  Was about to break, but the astronauts aboard the Endeavour repaired the solar arrays and the Hubble’s primary mirror  Space shuttle Discovery launched the Hubble into space  Sadly, the James Webb telescope will replace the Hubble space telescope in 2013.

POP QUIZ! POP QUIZ! What year was the Hubble launched into space? 1990

POP QUIZ! { continued } WWWWhich space shuttle fixed the Hubble space telescope ? TTTThe Endeavour

 What telescope will replace the Hubble space telescope ?  The James Webb telescope in 2013
