 Cushing’s Syndrome  Hyperthyroidism  Glucagonoma  Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN)  Hypopituitarism  These are just a few of the many disorders involving the endocrine system

 This is when your body is exposed to too much cortisol  The most common cause it hypercortisolism which is when your body makes too much cortisol  Common symptoms include:  Fatty Deposits throughout the body (i.e. between the shoulders)  Purple or pink Stretchmarks on the abdomen, thighs, breasts and arms  Skin that bruises easy  Slow healing of cuts and bug bites  Acne  Eventually you can get diabetes, hypertension, loss of muscle mass and strength, and osteoperosis  Treatment can involve:  Surgery  Decrease in use of corticosteroids if they are being used  Radiation therapy  Medications

 Hyperthyroidism is a disease in which your thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone, which controls your motabalism  One main cause for Hyperthyroidism is Grave’s Disease, which is a disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid  Can be caused by swollen thyroid gland or thyroid nodules  Symptoms include:  Rapid weight loss  Fast heartbeat  Sweating a lot  Feeling nervous  Feeling moody  Possibly no symptoms at all

 Hyperthyroidism is easy to treat and when treated, one can live a normal healthy life, but if not treated it can lead to heart problems, bone problems, and something called thyroid storm  You can take blood tests to see if you have hyperthyroidism if you are experiencing symptoms  Treatment includes:  Radioactive Iodine  Antithyroid medication  Once you are treated you need regular blood tests to see if it came back or if you experience too little thyroid hormones, both can happen

 A disease in which the glands of the endocrine system are overworking and/or develop tumors  Effected glands:  Pituitary  Parathyroid  Pancreas  Can be passed down through families (increases risk of getting MEN)  Can occur at any age and happens equally in men and woman  Some Symptoms include:  Abdominal Pain  Weakenss  Headaches  Fatigue  Nausae  Confusion  Weight Loss

 Treatment for this usually involves surgery then medication  Medication varies depending on the gland that the tumor has effected  When the gland is completely removed hormone therapy is required  Tumors can reappear

 A tumor on the pancreas that increases the glucagon production drastically  Painful and life threatening  5-10% of pancreatic tumors are Glucoganoma  No direct Causes but it can be affiliated with MEN 1  Symptoms:  High Blood Sugar  Excessive thirst and hunger  Inflamed mouth and tongue  Diarrhea  Frequent Urination at night  Fatigue  Depression

 Drugs are taken in order to reduce the effects of excess glucagon levels  surgery is then needed to remove the cancerous cells once the body is able to handle itself with the regulated glucagon levels  It is best to do the surgery while the tumor is confined to the pancreas

 Hypopituitarism the lack of one or more pituitary hormones from being produced  This can cause the organs that the hormones effect to not fucntion properly or work at all  Causes:  Brain surgery  Brain tumor  Head trauma  Infections of the brain and the tissues that support the brain  Radiation  Stroke  Burst from an aneurism  Tumors of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus  Auto immune diseases

 Symptoms:  Abdominal Pain  Loss of Appetite  Weight Loss  Fatigue  Weakness  Headaches  Vision Problems  Loss of sex drive  Hair Loss  Treatment includes surgery and lifetime hormone therapy  This can happen to anyone and once you have it you are affected forever
