Impact in the Classoom Reading Guides

Outline of How Funds Were Used Book Selections

Afterschool Science Fiction/ Fantasy Book Club Students read the books on their own, and then came together for meetings where the selection of books are discussed Size of club varied throughout the year from 5-13 students Students not involved in club also checked out the books to read Book selections are the first book of a series, opening the door for students to read the rest of the series

By promoting a club that emphasizes a community of readers that help one another in understanding and practicing reading, it allows students to develop the skills and confidence in reading that directly translates to success in all subject areas. Also, but creating a community in which students are openly talking about reading Science Fiction, it eliminates the stigma that reading or Science are not “cool” and allows for students to start suggesting books to each other. By knowing your students and connecting them with Science Fiction reading materials that meet their interests, it has the potential for opening the door to creating life long readers, and a desire within the students to study Sciences in a higher education setting.

A Big“Thank You!” This project would not have been possible without the funding from the Phoenix West Reading Council and tax credit donations made by Daniel and Debra Mass This club made a huge difference in lives of my students that participated, and they are very grateful for the opportunity to have access to and discuss new books that they otherwise would not have access. Thank You for making a difference in the lives of students!!
