Two semesters (September to January and February to June). There are four holiday seasons: Christmas - 2 weeks, 1 week between semesters; Spring (previously Easter) in April - 1 week; and Summer, spanning from the middle of June to September 14). 12 The program Classes begin at 8 am. Breaks are 10 minutes long or 20 minutes long the big one. Classes are 50 minutes long. We have 6 or 7 classes a day.

13 Grades 9 to 12 use a 1 to 10 grading system, with one being the lowest grade, 10 being the highest and 5 being the minimum passing grade. Continuous assessment is applied, with grades given for each individual work. Some subjects, such as Romanian Language and Maths (as well as Computer Science, Biology/ Physics/ Chemistry, English and History) require partial examinations right at the end of the semester (25% of the student's final mark for a subject). This requirement is mandatory as regulated by the Ministry of Education. Grading A Semester Average per Subject is taken by taking an arithmetical average from all the subject marks - at the end of the semester. A Yearly Average per subject is also taken, and an average below 5 will require the student to take a special exam in August for the subject that he has failed. If he still fails the exam, then he is required to repeat the whole year level again.

14 High school studies are four years in length, two compulsory (9th and 10th year), two non- compulsory (11th and 12th year). There are no exams between the 10th and the 11th years. National College (Colegiul Naţional) - the most prestigious high schools in Romania, most are each part of at least one international program and are "theoretical" schools. A National College is over 100 years old, and they have a very strong tradition in education. High school students graduating from a College must take the National Baccalaureate Exam (Examenul Naţional de Bacalaureat). The Bacalaureate comprises 2 or 3 oral examinations and 4 or 5 written examinations, usually spanning on the course of one and a half weeks in late June and September. It is a highly centralized, national exam. Passing this exam is the only way to gain entrance into a Romanian university.

15 Colegiul Naţional “Barbu Știrbei” is proud of its long standing tradition of extensive and popular school events. We appreciate the demonstrated team work and cooperation among staff, students, and parents. Academic programs Congratulations to all who have competed in school competitions in various subjects and the high percentage of graduates admitted to different forms of university education. Our students distinguish themselves through results achieved at school competitions and at the County and National Olympiads in different subjects.
