Fresh Look at the Old Testament Class 2 1/25/09

Class 1 Recap The Purpose of the Bible: ▫To teach us about the Glory of God, our relationship with God, and man’s salvation through Christ. Why we study the Old Testament (Rom 15:4) For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope. (2Ti 3:16) All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God my be complete thorughly equipped for all good work. From the fall of man we needed a redeemer / the OT leads us to that Redeemer = Christ (Rom 5:18) So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life. (Rom 5:19) For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.

Class 2 1/25/09 Genesis

Genesis means? Beginning Book of Origins Book of Beginnings What Genesis does not do: Give a detailed history of man The lack of detailed history is evidenced by the dedication of more time to Abraham’s family then to the history of the world to that point. What it does do: It Explains: 1.How we got here 2.Why we have sickness & death 3.Teach us that God has a plan to restore us

Some things we learn from Genesis There is only one God Denies pagan teaching that the things of the universe are God ▫Sun, moon, stars, trees, etc Denies teaching that everything is God ▫As taught in Scientology Teaches that God is Creator/Lawgiver/Judge God is concerned about man God is a covenant maker ▫Noah ▫Abraham and descendants God of promises ▫Faithful on Promises & Warnings

Genesis has two distinct sections 1.Creation Era (Ch 1-11) 1.Creation (Ch 1-2) 2.Fall of Man (Ch 3) 3.Flood (Ch 6-10) 4.Tower of Babel (Ch 11) 2.Patriarchs (Ch 12-50) 1.Abraham (12-23) 2.Isaac(24-26) 3.Jacob (27-35) 4.Joseph (37-50)
