3  Normally there is ONE word that has the same meaning and is used in formal writing.  Examples: put off – postpone, go up- increase.

4  Examples:  Do away with : Abolish – colloquial Murder – colloquial  Miss (something) out : Fail to include Lose a chance – colloquial

5  Object: before or after the particle  Example: We did our bathroom up last year We did up our bathroom last year.  Object=pronoun it must go between the two parts of the verb.  Example: We did it up by ourselves.  Some verbs can only take the object AFTER the particle. With these the pronoun also follows the second part of the verb.  Example: She has fallen for the boy who lives next door. Fortunately, he has also fallen for her.

6  Normally the meaning isn't obvious from the meaning of its component.  It´s better to learn them as individual items.
