2. School Procedures Absences- Please call 665-8406 to report an absence, and when the child returns send in the required reason for absence. *If your child is absent, send them in early the following day for makeup assignments. I am in the room each day at 8:05. If they cannot come in early they must come in at recess. Playground supervision begins at 8:15 each morning. Students should not be arriving before that time unless it is for an activity inside the school. Emergency Early Dismissal- You must physically come into the building and get your child if you checked, “Wait for pickup by parent or alternate caregiver.”

3. Language Arts Curriculum There are 5 major components to the integrated Language Arts program, which are reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Through these areas, students will work toward becoming clear and interpretive thinkers and communicators in a supportive community of learners. 4. Homework Homework will usually be assigned Monday through Thursday and occasionally on the weekends. Some nights it may consist simply of reading. Hopefully, students are reading everyday. In addition there may be long-range assignments. Project sheets with expectations, dates, and a grading rubric will be handed out when the project is assigned. Students may come in early everyday for extra help or to finish something that is incomplete. I am in the room each day at 8:05. I am not available after school.

5. Evaluation Tests and quizzes Periodically there will be quizzes or tests on reading material or grammar skills taught in class. Students will be provided with the necessary information in class to prepare for them, and they will be announced. Vocabulary and spelling quizzes may be given alternatively. Vocabulary words and spelling lists are gained from the reading materials. Grades are based on the following percentages: *65%: Classwork including writing samples, written reading responses, reader’s workshop tasks, reading journal assignments, projects, and class participation *20%: Quizzes and tests *15%: Homework,, and class preparation

6. Classroom Expectations Be Prepared. Come to class everyday with materials and homework completed. Be Respectful. To me and especially to each other. Be Responsible. Remember to complete class routines such as copying done homework correctly at the end of class Be Focused. Stay on task Be Helpful. To me and especially to each other. Consequences – 1 st: Warning, 2 nd: 20 minute detention, 3 rd: 40 minute detention, 4 th: Principal and 40 minute detention

7. Report Cards Grades 4-6 report card is on the A-F scale All assignments have point values and grades are determined by number of points earned out of total points assigned. Student grades will be available online beginning in October your Power School account. Information regarding that is being distributed tonight. Students will no longer receive interim reports unless they are failing a class. Hard copies of report cards will not be distributed. You will access them using your Power School account. If you do not have a Power School account, or if you did not receive information tonight, contact the main office.

8. Enriched LA in Grade 7 Three requirements A or A- average in Reading and in Writing in 6 th grade* Score of 120 or higher on the TCS/2 test taken in 5 th Grade Passing score on the middle school assessment given in February/March

10. Social Studies Curriculum This course is designed to teach students about some of the earliest empires of our world, starting with Ancient Greece. The Roman Empire will also be explored by students. A survey of African civilizations and the origin of Islam as well as an introduction to the Middle Ages are explored. Students will develop a greater understanding of the world around them in societal terms as well as geographical terms, using the five themes of Geography. Prentice Hall History of Our World is the textbook
