1 Workforce Essentials Ms. Baumgartner “Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas Edison

2  Work History – all of the jobs that one holds during the course of a working lifetime  Jobs are often used as a way to achieve something else  To learn occupational skills  To earn money for college  To gain experience to qualify for a better job  For most, first jobs are only stepping stones to later ones

4  Stable job – One that you consider to be permanent and that may last several years  This does not mean you stay in the job forever  They usually come from hard word and self- direction  Self-direction - setting goals and taking steps to get there  Promotion-advancement

5  Advancing in your job usually requires doing more than what is asked by manager  Extra duties  Extra training/education  Some occupations become obsolete (no longer used) –keep up to date on job changes

6  Remember:  A job at your age is a beginning  It’s a way to earn $, get experience, learn skills, and prove yourself  Things can get better if you are cooperative, follow rules and directions, take an interest in what you are doing, and do your best  Employers tend to recognize and reward good work

7  During your life, you will probably adjust to changes due to technology  People who are more successful are generally those who anticipate and adapt to change  Change is inevitable, be a team player and go with the flow!

8  JOB A: short-term job  (6 wks)  pays $12/hr for 35 hours per week  JOB B: regular, long-term job  Pays $10/hr for 40 hours a week  JOB C: regular, long-term job  Pays $24,000/year for 40 hours a week  JOB D: part-time job  Pays $435/week for 37.5 hours a week

9  Some high schoolers regard school as something to “get through” so they can be free to do what they want  But, school is a workplace too  employers will look at your school record for clues as to what kind of an employee you might be  A poor school record is hard to defend  IMPROVEMENT MEANS A LOT!!

10  NOW is the time to change habits and attitudes that may hold you back in the workplace!!

11  Shaping your career  Take more skills to strengthen your career skills  Consider taking more courses that strengthen your academic background (Math, English)  Consider taking a computer course  Do some research on the skills required for your desired career
