4  The $1.39 billion ‘Monash-Citylink-West Gate’ M1 upgrade is the largest statefunded road project in Victoria’s history. Stretching 75km from Werribee to Narre Warren, it delivers a safe and efficient fourlane freeway that is Melbourne’s transport spine.  The project was split into four main pieces, and the 6.2km West Gate Freeway section through the CBD is relatively short in length. Yet it more than makes up for it in complexity, and an alliance of five groups delivered the project. Background

5  To call this a brownfield site is a major understatement – the working parameters are tight and the existing roadways carry more than 160,000 vehicles every day.  New bridges, ramps, pillars and pavement contribute to a smoother and smarter traffic flow for the many motorists using this vital link.  Special legislation was created for the project. Schedule 5A was added to the Road Management Act 2004 that included: – Limits of the project – Acquisition of land – Surrender and Divesting of land Background (cont.)
