By Mrs. L. Fox Ardrey Kell High School Spring, 2013 Replacement Reactions

Single Replacement Reactions Occur when a more active element replaces a less active element in a compound Examples: Na + + Al 3 Cl  NaCl + 3Al 3+ Mg 2+ + FeO  MgO + Fe 2+ Use the Activity Series chart to determine whether an element will replace another

3)b) Type of SR Reaction Active metal is placed in water – according to the Rules, what will the product be? Li+ + H2O 

3)c) Type of SR Reaction Active metal is placed in an acid – what will be product be? Na + + HCl 

3)d) Type of SR Reaction 1 halide (a halogen ion) replaces a less active halide CaI 2 + F 2  CaF 2 + I 2

Practice Predicting SR Products

Double Replacement Reactions Occur when 2 compounds switch elements Formation of a precipitate Acid-base neutralization Products are H 2 O and a salt (an ionic compound, not just NaCl)

Formation of a Precipitate A precipitate a solid that is formed when 2 liquids mix Occurs because 1 of the new products is insoluble Can be predicted by use of the Solubility Table

Use the Solubility Table for the following: (NH4) 2 CO 3 AgNo 3 Al(OH) 3 CuSO 4 ZnCO 3 ZnCl 2 Ba(OH) 2

Acid-Base Neutralization Reactions Acids will have H + bonded to a negative ion Examples: HCl, H 2 SO 4 HNO 3 Many bases will have an OH- ion attached to a metal Examples: NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH) 2
