The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon killed 11 men and injured 17 others. It is the largest oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. Gulf of Mexico

4.9 million barrels of crude oil, (210,000,000 U.S. gallons) was released into the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida coastlines.

The spill caused extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and to the Gulf’s tourism and fishing industries. Oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

In October 2011, reports show dolphins and whales continue to die at about twice the normal rate. Thousands of marine animals, fish, and birds were killed by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In June, 2010 BP oil company set up a $20 Billion fund to compensate the victims of the oil spill in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.
