The Church at Smyrna What is a Martyr? Gk. μ ρτυς – Means a witness Jesus' Description (v 8) First and Last (Isa 41:4) Dead and Alive (Heb 2:14-15) The Christian is called to die in order to live! Jesus said unto his disciples, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.' (Matt 16:24)
Christianity Puts Us at Odds with This World (Rev 2:9) I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Issues were three-fold: Tribulation – θλ ψις – Pressing together Physical Poverty – Lost jobs and income Blasphemy – By worshipers of Jehovah
Christianity Puts Us at Odds with This World Christians are surrounded by opposition (2 Tim 3:12) Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Our Christianity will not allow us to be as the world is! (Eph 5:11; Rom 12:2) Our Christianity will sometimes get in the way of being socially prosperous! Our Christianity will get in the way of our being in union with other religions. (Eph 4:4-6)
True Life Comes Out of Death (Rev 2:10) Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Suffer for righteousness brings prosperity (1 Pet 3:14) Meaningful Life comes through death Physically (1 Pet 3:17-18, 21-22) Spiritually (Rom 8:13; Jn 11:25; Rom 6:3-10)
The Conquerer Will Not Be Harmed by the Second Death (Rev 2:11) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcomes shall not be hurt of the second death. What is the Second Death? (Rev 20:14-15; 21:8) Hell is the necessary results of Sin! Escaping Hell begins by you becoming a conquerer now (1 Cor 9:24-27) (1 Tim 4:8) Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
