Current funding ending June 2012; NTER legislation ending August 2012 Stronger Futures package responds to the Stronger Futures 2009 and 2011 consultations, and evidence from NTER evaluation More needs to be done to Close the Gap in the NT People could have their say in consultations and on legislation proposal

4 STRONGER FUTURES PACKAGE  $3.4 billion over ten years Long-term commitment to work with Aboriginal people in NT Focus on providing additional employment opportunities for Aboriginal people in remote communities Ten-year funding for Stronger Futures in 2012 Budget Supporting legislation currently before Parliament National Partnership Agreement being negotiated with NT Government 4

7 CHILDREN AND FAMILIES $442.4 million over ten years Communities for Children 19 Communities for Children sites (up from 4) Children’s safety, early childhood services 2 mobile child-protection teams (25 staff) More Remote Aboriginal Family and Community Workers Up to 23 Intensive Family Support Services Existing early-childhood services continuing 7

9 Better schooling outcomes and encouraging school attendance 200 extra teaching positions to continue School Nutrition Program  SFNT legislation – new SEAM School Enrolment and Attendance Measure (SEAM) improved and extended More support for parents, stronger links with schools Phased in from July 2012 (Subject to legislation) Aligns with NT Government’s Every Child Every Day strategy EDUCATION $583.4 million over ten years 9

10 Policing Maintaining extra remote police numbers (60) and Themis stations (18) Special police services - Substance Abuse Intelligence Desks and Dog Operations Units – disrupting trafficking, NT Child Abuse Task Force, National Indigenous Violence and Child Abuse Intelligence Task Force (Australian Crime Commission) Night patrols, legal assistance 80 night patrols Supplementary funding for legal aid services Prohibited material and bail and sentencing provisions COMMUNITY SAFETY $619.3 million over ten years 10

11  SFNT legislation Alcohol management Existing alcohol restrictions to continue – with Alcohol Management Plans as a community-based alternative to restrictions  SFNT legislation Helping problem drinkers Income management for people with serious alcohol and/or drug problems Signs More respectful signs; unnecessary signs removed TACKLING ALCOHOL ABUSE $75.6 million over ten years 11

17 17 NEXT STEPS Significant and long-term commitment by the Government towards closing the gap in the NT Government working differently with communities in the future Government being able to work more closely with Aboriginal people Providing additional employment opportunities for Aboriginal people National Partnership Agreement being negotiated with NT Government
