**LO: I can change a fraction to a decimal.**

<date> Learning Objective: LO: I can change a fraction to a decimal.

3
**Converting Fractions into Decimals**

When converting fractions to decimals remember unless the fraction is improper/top heavy then the decimal value will always be between 0 and 1 If we look at the fraction ½ we know that; ½ + ½ = 1 whole So half of a whole is 0.5 because = 1 Alternatively if we use the fraction ½ and with a calculator type in 1 ÷ 2, we get the answer 0.5 (this method may come in useful later on)

4
**How would you work out the decimal equivalent to ¼?**

With some common fractions it is good to know the decimal equivalents by heart but this is not always possible. How would you work out the decimal equivalent to ¼? Well we know that ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = 1 whole So 1 whole ÷ 4 would give us the decimal equivalent of ¼. ¼ = 0.25 Because = 1

5
**With a partner can you work out the following decimal equivalences to these fractions;**

4 3 8 2 1 1 ÷ 10 = 0.1 so 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2 5 1 1 ÷ 10 = 0.1 10 0.1 0.2 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 so 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 so 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125 4 3 8 1 4 3 8 2 If 1 ÷ 4 =0.25 0.25 x 3 = ¾ = 0.75 0.75 0.125

6
**What have we learnt so far?**

Let’s look at these fractions and decimal equivalents 1 1 1 0.125 = 0.2 = 0.1 10 5 8 Using these facts can you work out the decimal equivalents to these fractions? 9 3 3 4 7 10 5 8 5 8 0.8 0.875 0.9 0.6 0.375

**Converting fractions to decimals**

1) Divide the numerator by the denominator 2) Can you do it mentally? 3) Can you work it out by using an informal written method? 4) Can you work it out by using a formal written method? Converting fractions to decimals Steps to success 1) 3 ÷ 10 4) 1 ÷ 7 = 0.143 to 3 decimal places 3 1 2) 3 ÷ 10 = 0.3 10 7 3 3) 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 So 0.25 x 3 = 0.75 ) 3 2 6 4
