Book Launch Book Launch 25 October 2007, University of Melbourne Towards a Spatially Enabled Society Edited by Abbas Rajabifard

In order to showcase Prof Ian Williamson’s achievements and dedication in teaching and research which formed some of the foundations of spatial enablement, through the Centre for SDIs and LA, The University of Melbourne, we have coordinated and published the book “Towards a Spatially Enabled Society” which it is hoped will contribute to the discipline at the same time.

Dedication….. This book is dedicated to Professor Ian Williamson … …for his dedication and contribution to teaching and research in the related fields of land administration and SDI, which formed some of the foundation to the concept of spatial enablement. The impact of Professor Williamson’s research and scholarly activities to the spatial industry and discipline cannot be measured in publications and citations alone. The ideas influence the way countries are governed, and, particularly, the operation and evolution of cadastres, land administration systems and SDIs. These systems are now designed, built and monitored in ways that support the new strategic direction of spatially enabled government and society and facilitate sustainable development objectives, whether the country is developed or not. Towards a Spatially Enabled Society

Book Structure and Topic The overall theme of the book is “Towards a Spatially Enabled Society” with two focus areas: –The next generation of LAS to support sustainable development –SDI development to support a spatially enabled society.

Book Structure and Topic The book is divided into three parts: – The first two parts comprise 30 chapters relating to the two focus areas and the overall theme. – The final part contains information reflecting on the career of Prof Williamson.

Contribution Contributions to this book have come from leaders and researchers who have an interest in spatial enablement and who have worked with Ian over the past three decades.
